Martina Hingis is Banned; Tennis Gets Another Black Eye
This is anarticle on the banning of Martina Hingis by the International Tennis Federation.
Though she has angrily denied the allegations over and over, going as far as calling a press conference to address the issue, and retiring from the game in the process, Hingis' ban will tarnish Tennis in a year which has seen the sport get caught up in several scandals.
Early this year the Tennis world was rocked with accusations and speculation that some of its player's were involved in matches whose outcomes were fixed. One such match involving Russia's Nikolay Davydenko (ranked #4 in the world) is currently under investigation because of irregular betting patterns. Another player, Dmitry Tursunov, told the press how he was approached over a period of time and asked if he wanted to "make some money," by throwing a match. To add a level of validity to the charges, players such as Martina Navratilova have come out and said how easy it is to fix a match.
Then there was the strange case of Tommy Haas getting sick in a competition amidst allegations that he was poisoned. Though nothing came of the story, it once again painted Tennis in a less than favorable light.
There are also rumors, like in so many sports these days, of players using performance enhancing drugs, which in light of MLB's Mitchell Report, have generated even more negative attention for this grand old sport.
So with these distractions as a background, Tennis needed its feel good story this past year. It needed the successful comeback of one of its tennis prodigies. It needed the triumphant return of the "Swiss Miss," the former tempestuous teen who had dominated women's tennis in the late 1990's, becoming Wimbledon's youngest winner along the way when she took home the coveted title in 1997 at the tender age of 16.
For a while it got just that, as Martina Hingis roared back from a brief, injury induced retirement, and made her way back to being the 7th ranked player in the world. Just for a moment, Tennis had its feel good story.
Then just as quickly as it began it was over. After Martina tested positive on a sample taken after her 3rd round match at Wimbledon this year, the International Tennis Federation banned the young starlet. With that the sport of Tennis will wave goodbye to one of its more popular players. It is a move which comes along during a dark period for the sport. It is a moment that Tennis did not need. Goodbye Martina Hingis, we will miss you.
