Racquetball as a Winter Hobby
Racquetball as a winter hobby will produce results that are not apparent when you begin this sport. It will change your life. Kids, teens, adults, and even those who are ancient in days utilize this sport to stay in shape in the winter months.
By November in southern Oregon, the rain and wind is in full force. The pending darkness by 5 o'clock in the afternoon dispels any idea or prospect for some outdoor activities such as playground basketball, bike riding, even a game of catch with the football. What is the solution? Racquetball. Racquetball is a by far, my favorite winter hobby, as well as the preferred winter hobby of adults and kids alike in Oregon. Oregon is one of the hotspots for this intense and engaging sport, boasting one of the best high school racquetball teams in the country. Portland is also the site of one of the tournament stops on the pro tour every year. But, what makes this sport so appealing to me, and so many others?
Nature of the Sport
If you are not in shape, this sport will get you in shape fast! In the beginning, you are chasing the ball like a kid chases a chicken in the pen. It is estimated that a 2 hour, fast paced game of racquetball burns in the neighborhood of 2,000 calories. First and foremost, I love the workout. Additionally, the pure aggression of the sport that is a by product of the speed of the game, as well as the close proximity that you are to your opponents on the court makes this sport unique. There is nothing like hearing the ball explode off the wall like a sonic boom as it rolls out.
Getting Started
If you are looking for an activity that you and your family can do as a hobby this winter, go to your local YMCA and investigate as to whether they have racquetball courts or not. If they do, then you have already most of what you need to engage in this winter activity. You can go to a local retailer and find a, beginners racquet for $20. A can of balls is $4. If you qualify as low income you can join your local YMCA for a mere $30 a month or less. So you have an engaging, fun, and unequivocal healthy activity for you and your kids $50 or less.
Taking it to the Next Level
Personally, I play at a very competitive level, so involving the kids is now always an option. If you find that you are beating most people in your local racquetball club, and desire to challenge your skills, find a tournament in your surrounding area. This is a great way to expand on this winter hobby, and meet some new friends. For example, at the Bay Area Athletic Club in Coos Bay Oregon, they have the Turkey Shoot in early December, as well as the Valentine's Day Massacre tournament in mid February. This coastal club is a hidden hotspot for racquetball, featuring many past and present top level players in the state of Oregon.
If you are serious about beginning racquetball, expect to play more as you get better. I generally play 4-5 times a week, for 2-3 hours a night in the winter months. This sport is very, very addicting. The cleansing of the mind and body that accompanies this sport has kept me sane in trying and stressful times in my life. It is not just a winter hobby. It is a lifestyle.
