March Madness Bracket Tips Pt. 2
With the NCAA field now official and the brackets available online, here are a few tips for competing in your office pool.
In the West region, Kansas is #1 but the Jayhawks have had problems in the Big Dance the last few years and a date with either Kentucky or Villanova is slated in the 2nd round. As someone married to a Kentuckian, I can tell you that there is no love lost between the two and when Kentucky is hitting the three they can beat anyone. Of course, they might not get past Villanova in a very even matchup, but if they do it will be a great battle between two of the marquee teams in college basketball. And when filling out your bracket, do not put "Wildcats" on the line to advance as both of the teams use that nickname.
Looking down the rest of the region, UCLA, Pittsburgh, and Southern Illinois are all dangerous and I predict that one of them will win this region. If I had to go with one Pittsburgh would be the choice as a #3 seed. A second round game of interest could be S. Ill. vs the Illini of Illinois. The coach of Illinois, Bruce Weber, formerly coached the Salukis of SIU before moving on to "greener pastures". Ironic. SIU is a #4 seed, Illinois a #12. Don't look for Duke to get too far, they might even lose in the first round. Yay!
In the East, North Carolina is big, deep and athletic. I look for the 'Heels to get to the Elite 8 at least, with UNC being probably the biggest threat to Florida to win it all AND they play close to home in this region. The Georgetown Hoyas or possibly Texas are the only teams I can envision going to Atlanta from this region. I haven't seen Georgetown this season, so I'm not sure about them, but Texas couldn't handle Kansas, the closest thing they've played to North Carolina in terms of talent.
Arkansas is a possible upset winner in the 5-12 matchup if the right team shows up. The Hogs have been maddeningly inconsistent until the last 5 or 6 games. I know as a longtime fan what they're capable of doing, but am trying not to make a "homer" pick here. This team is tall, talented and the 2nd most athletic team in the rugged SEC only to Florida. If they play as they did in winning their first three games in the SEC Tournament, the Razorbacks could win one game, maybe even two, but their inconsistency will rear it's head at some point, so don't pick them to go too far. In my opinion, #10 seed Texas Tech only got in because of who their coach is. Bob Knight brings buzz and tv ratings, if only to see if he'll throw a chair (or referee) or say or do something outrageous.
Last of all, the South region. Ohio State looks to be the class of the region, but the Buckeyes are very young even though Greg Oden probably hasn't been carded since 3rd grade. I swear the guy looks 35 and he's a freshman?
Just call this the Dickie V. invitational. With John Calipari (known in this part of the country as Calamary, like a squid) and SlickRick Pitino in this region, Dick Vitale of ESPN might pop a vein with his favorite Paisan coaches in the same regional. He might even have to choose between the two in the third round. Nevada is dangerous and could pose problems for Memphis in the 2nd round however.
Tennessee could cause problems with their style of play and could even knock off Ohio State if Chris Lofton of the Vols goes on a tear. If there is a better shooter and scorer than Lofton in college basketball, I haven't seen him or her. The guy can flat wear out the best defender when he's hot, which is often. Tubby Smith made a big mistake letting this guy out of Kentucky, and Tubby is under a lot of fire in the Bluegrass State.
In short, I think OSU is still a year away from having a good shot at winning it all. I have the Buckeyes losing to Tennessee, with Louisville winning the region. The Cardinals are playing very close to home in Lexington, whcih should be interesting given the history of this rivalry and Pitino's past.
So to sum up, my bracket has Florida, Pittsburgh, UNC and Louisville in the Final Four. That would mean Florida-Pittsburgh in one semi-final and UNC-Louisville in the other. My Final has Florida taking on North Carolina which would be a great matchup, with the Tarheels denying the Gators a repeat in a nailbiter. Remember folks, these are just opinions, so please don't bet the farm. Just fill out your bracket and hope for the best. Remember, no #16 has ever beaten a #1 and all 4 #1 seeds have never advanced to the Final Four and have fun!
