Tennis Strings - Make the Right Choice for You

Maybe you just bought a new racket, and need to get it strung. Maybe you just broke your first set of strings, and need to find a replacement. Whatever the reason, this article can help.

Have you taken a look at all of the tennis strings available in your local sports store lately? It's enough to give you a headache, especially if you're not sure what you're looking for. This article is intended to help you know the difference between one string and another, and to help you choose the right string for you. Let's get started.

There are several things to keep mind when you are trying to decide which string(s) are right for you. These include (in no particular order):

1. The Material out of which the string is made: The most common types of strings include Natural Gut, Synthetic Gut (Nylon), and Polyester. It is also very common to use one type of string in the mains (up and down) and another type of string in the crosses of your racquet. This is called hybrid stringing.

2. Tension (how tightly the strings are strung): Each racquet comes with a recommended tension range. Generally speaking, the higher the tension, the more control you'll have over the shot; the lower the tension, the more power you'll have. I recommend having your racquet strung in the middle of its recommended tension range at first, and making any adjustments from there. You'll have to experiment to find your own preference for your particular racquet and style of play.

3. Gauge (the thickness of the string): The general rule is that the thicker the string, the longer it will last; and the thinner the string, the better the performance will be. String gauges range from 15 to 19 (the higher the number the thinner the string).

4. Playability (the performance of a string combined with the way it feels when you strike the ball): Everyone has a different definition of what the "perfect" string feels like when it strikes the ball. Some people prefer a rather firm (or "dead") feel, while others prefer to have a softer feeling string. It is generally accepted that Natural Gut is still the most "playable" string available for feel and control of the ball.

5. Durability (how long a string lasts before it breaks or goes limp): Usually the strings with the most "feel" are the fastest to wear out. Unfortunately for those of us who break strings all the time, buying a string that will last more than a few sets will probably require a sacrifice in feel. Polyester is one of the most durable strings on the market.

6. Cost: The cost of strings varies quite a bit depending on who you're buying from, but generally Natural Gut is the most expensive string, followed by Polyester, and then Synthetic Gut.

Hopefully you already know a lot more than you did five minutes ago, and you may already have an idea of what kind of string you're going to want. Most of the pros currently use Natural Gut strings, or a hybrid combination of Natural Gut and Polyester (if you want to use a hybrid string job, just buy a half set of each of the strings that you want). As far as specific recommendations go, I recommend Wilson's Natural Gut strings; Babolat's Conquest series Synthetic Gut strings; and either Babolat's Pro Hurricane series or Luxilon's Big Banger series of Polyester strings.

I sincerely hope the above information has been helpful to you in choosing the perfect string for you. Keep an open mind, experiment with different types of strings, and pretty soon you'll find the perfect fit for you and your game.
