Facts About Table Tennis
Table Tennis is a popular and extremely fast indoor game. It probably began with students at English universities
By about 1900, it became very popular in Britain and United States. By then it was played with a celluloid ball and with hollow banjo-shaped rackets covered with vellum (a material like strong paper), the noise of which gave rise to its best-known name at that time 'ping-pong'. Then interest in the game died down until after World War I, when it was revived in Britain. Rules for playing were drawn up and in 1927 the English Table Tennis Association was founded. The game grew in popularity all over the world and nowadays players from some 40 countries take part in the world championships. More than 1 million players belong to clubs, which are members of the International Table Tennis Federation.
Table tennis is played on a hard, smooth table usually green 2.7 meters long and 1.5 meters wide, standing 76 centimeters above the floor. The net across the middle is slightly wider than the table and 15 centimeters high. The balls are light and hollow, made of white celluloid or plastic and measuring about 37 millimeters across. The racket must be made of wood but it may have either or both faces covered with pimpled rubber; if desired, a thin layer of sponge rubber may be under the pimpled rubber. This surface gives a better control of the ball and makes easier to spin. So fast is the play by experts and so much room is needed for running, that championship rules lay down a minimum space of 12 meters by 6 meters for each table. Powerful lighting is provided usually at each end of the table and the floor should be hard and springy with a firm foothold.
Expert players wear rubber shoes, grey flannel trousers or shorts or skirts and a shirt or singlet of one dark color. To perform really well a player must be very fit indeed. Most table tennis tournaments have junior events, for which the players generally have to be under the age of 17 at the start of the season. In some countries, there are events for young people of fewer than 15, 13 and even 11 as well. Table tennis is very much a game for the young; most of the world singles champions won their title for the first time at the age of about 19. To be a champion you must have a good eye for a ball, start young and practice hard.
