  • THE CHOICE OF PROFESSIONALS. Tourna Grip is the only grip that gets tacky the more you sweat. Tourna Grip starts with a Dry Feel but once you start sweating, the grip becomes more tacky and gives you a better grip. This is why it’s so popular among pro’s, college players, and amateurs alike. When match is on the line, use a grip that won’t slip – Tourna Grip.
  • The proprietary technology of Tourna Grip enables moisture to wick moisture through the grip instead of back onto your hand which creates slippage. Most other tacky grips slip as soon as the grip gets wet with sweat.

Before There was Graphite

As the popularity of tennis grew, materials used to manufacture better and faster racquets evolved.

In the late nineteenth century, Major Walter C. Wingfield, a British Army officer of Welsh descent, invented the wooden racquet. It had exclusive worldwide use throughout the following century. The racquet's head and handle were made by laminating woods like mahogany, ash, hornbeam, and maple. Besides warping and cracking, wooden racquets were stiff and heavy and offered little power. As a sidebar, Major Wingfield also created the rules for lawn tennis.

Lighter, more flexible metal racquets came along in 1967 when the Wilson Sporting Company created the aluminum T2000. It was made popular by Jimmy Connors, a top-ranked male player in that era. According to , "An Evolutionary History of Tennis Racquets," by Jeff Cooper, metal racquets were around in 1889 but they did not gain popularity.

Ball control proved difficult for some players using the aluminum, so manufacturers searched for other materials and discovered plastic resins, glass, carbon, and graphite fibers. Racquets were now being made with various combinations of these materials. Wood and aluminum were also included in the making of some of the composites. By the 1980's, graphite fibers rose to the top. Other fibers like titanium, Kevlar, boron, ceramics, and Twaron were soon mixed with it. Racquets made exclusively with graphite and resins were classed as 100% graphite. The more graphite a racquet had the higher it was considered in quality. Players got back some stiffness and strength. Weight could also be shifted anywhere on the racquet head depending on one's preference.

The perfect tennis racquet provides the average player with all the power, weight, balance, stiffness, flexibility, and control she or he needs, so new materials and composites are still being researched today. Jeff Cooper reports that the Head Company has created a racquet with piezoelectric materials and technology. Vibrations from the ball striking the racquet's strings convert to electric energy which returns to the frame via a circuit board in the handle.
