Marketing on a Shoestring
What if I told you that this tough economy actually presented you with a great opportunity to grow your business? I know, I can hear you now: "Give me a break Steve, the last thing I need is some Pollyannaish 'look for the silver lining' advice!"
A: What if I told you that this tough economy actually presented you with a great opportunity to grow your business? I know, I can hear you now: "Give me a break Steve, the last thing I need is some Pollyannaish 'look for the silver lining' advice!"
Fear not; we are on the same page.
What I am talking about is an actually, real opportunity, and it is this: There are lots of customers looking for a deal right now and all you need to do is catch their eye and attract them with a great offer. The fact of the matter is that it is historically true that in recessionary times, customer loyalty fades as more pressing economic concerns come to the fore.
Simply put, people are looking for a bargain. Give them one, and they will beat a path to your door.
That is the 'great offer' part of the equation. It is no coincidence that two of the only Fortune 500 companies to post substantial gains this past few years were Wal-Mart and McDonald's. Why? Because they are discounters. If it works for them in this economy, it can work for you too.
That then begs the question: If offering big discounts is a winning pricing strategy right now, how do you catch their eye? The answer is, shoestring marketing.
Over at my site I offer a webinar called Marketing on a Shoestring (look for "Webinars" on the blue tab.) In it, I share about 25 different ways to market your business - without breaking the bank.
Look, most small businesses discover one or two marketing ideas, beat them to death, and then wonder why they are not getting any new customers. The reason is that the same 'ol people see your same 'ol marketing. But if you mix it up and try something new, new people will discover you are out there and then your business will grow once they see your great prices.
What I am suggesting is that you try 3, 4, 5 or more new, cheap marketing ideas and see if you don't get some new business. Some of my favorites are:
e-mail marketing: I am not talking about Spam, but I am talking about sending out individualized e-mail offers to selected people. It is the 21st century equivalent of direct mail. Create a list via a search or other means, create a snappy e-mail offer, and send it out. Maybe you will send it to members of your local chamber of commerce, or all the lawyers in town. It doesn't matter; what matters is that you can get in front of some new people at almost no cost.
Overnight radio: Drive-time radio spots on a big station can cost upwards of $500 a minute. Advertise on the same station overnight, and while the numbers are of course much smaller, they are still not insignificant, and the cost might be something like $10 a spot.
Co-op advertising: My dad used to have a giant billboard on the San Diego freeway in Los Angeles that said "Carpet World . . . Elegance Underfoot." In the corner it also said "featuring Ban-Lon Carpets." Ban-Lon paid for about 80% of that ad. That is co-op advertising. If you have a wholesaler or distributor with whom you work, see if they offer co-op funds. Mention their product in your ad (online, in print, or over the air) and they will pick up a good portion of it.
Social media: Yes, we all know we are supposed to tweet, but guess what? It works. Engaging in social media, if done right, can create new relationships and extend your brand. And when those new friends check out your site (you have a great site, right?), they will want to do business with you.
Pay per click: The beauty of PPC ads is that you only pay for qualified leads - people who like your ad enough to click on it. Use it on Facebook, Yahoo, and more.
You get the idea. By expanding your options and marketing more with inexpensive options, you can grow your business, even in this economy.
