Get Your Game On

Playing tennis? Read this brief description of what to look for when buying a tennis racquet.

Finding one just right for you is like finding the perfect fitting shoe. You have to try on a few for size, style, and comfort. Depending on what you prefer, your racquet will have different requirements. In order to figure out the basics of the racquet you prefer, you must look at the head size, the length of the racquet, and the weight and balance overall.

The head size will determine if you are focusing on gaining power or thriving for control.

Having a larger head size, which generally ranges from 110 to 135 square inches, will cause the average tennis player to focus more on their power. Since the head size will be bigger, you will be able to get a better reach on your ground strokes, gain an added leverage on your serves, and be able hit off-center shots with more accuracy.

Having a smaller head, which generally ranges from 85 to 110 square inches, will not offer as much power, but it will cause the average tennis player to work on their control. Since there will be a smaller target, the tennis player will be forced to place the return shot in a specific part of the racquet, forcing a controlled shot.

Depending on what head size you think would work for you, you should consider the length of a tennis racquet. Tennis racquets ranger from 27 to 29 inches in length.

The longer the racquet, the better you are able to reach for ground strokes and volley shots. This length will also add power to your playing.

Shorter racquets force the player to move more quickly, because you have to take that extra step to get to the ball, instead of simply sticking out your racquet.

Once you have decided which length you will prefer and the head size that best suits you, I would recommend checking out the weight and balance of the racquet.

The heavier weighted racquets will have more power, but you will not be able to move as swiftly as a lighter racquet enforces.

There are three types of racquets you could consider getting: heavier, head-light racquet; lighter, head-heavy racquet; or the evenly balanced.

Before buying a racquet based on what you think you should get, I would recommend testing out a couple of different ones. Figure out which one you would feel most comfortable with, then decide on your style later.

Make sure that you take a look at the head size, the length of the racquet, plus the weight and balance of it. Good luck and have fun!
