Tennis Tournament Brings Hundreds of Junior Players to Middle Georgia

Hundreds of junior tennis players travel to Middle Georgia to compete in singles and doubles matches during a level 1 event.

Doubles action began Friday where nearly 500 of the tournament's singles players signed up for doubles.

Local girls 12s players Daria Brown and Rebecca Rubanov defeated Hannah Daniel and Claire lacksen 9-8 in the first round. The heat was a major component during their first match.

"(It was) a big factor," Brown said. "It was the middle of the day, very hot. We had to use frog togs."

To prepare for the event, the girls put in extra hours on court.

"We did two weeks training in Macon," Brown said. "The first week was 4-7 p.m. four days a week, second week 9-12."

The pair lost its next match to top seeded players Hannah Hutchings and Peyton Lee 8-3.

"The doubles matches helped me get ready for my singles," Rubanov said. "Winning feels good, but losing and playing your hardest 100 percent of the time feels even better."

Macon boys 18 team Becker O'Shaughnessey and Daniel Strawn took out Aaron Barris and Matthew Hill 8-4.

"We got up early with a big break and held out the whole time," O'Shaughnessey said. "Want to play well, get in good shape and prepare for the hot summer."

The No. 4 seed pair, Alex Suk (Macon) and Bryan Ip, punched its semifinal ticket in the boys 10s by defeating Thomasville's Kenneth Harrison and Nic Kadel 7-5.

But Suk and Ip were unable to capitalize on the momentum and lost to Campbell Harmon and Kai Rico 4-6.

"We were down 3-5 and couldn't come back," Suk said.

"The doubles matches will help me with volleys," Ip said.

In the finals, Joshua Raab and Niles Rachal won the title despite never playing together prior to the event.

"It feels really good, and it took a lot of hard work and practicing to get to this point," Raab said. "I'm happy to hold (the trophy) for the first time in my life."

Rachal credited his doubles partner and coach Jason Fleeman for his success at the tournament.

Second-seeded Kavya Patel and Bella Tummillo, who train at UTA academy in Atlanta, claimed the girls 10 title after knocking off top-seeded Jenna and Lindsay Tulenko, 6-2.

"This is my first time being in Macon, and I can't believe I won," Patel said.

The girls hit the courts five days per week.

"I was hot, but I drank a lot of fluids," Tummillo said. "But we worked together as a team and were prepared for this big day."

Singles began Saturday with action at John Drew Smith Tennis Center, Tattnall Tennis Center, Mercer, Macon State College, Wesleyan College and Stratford.
