The Head Size of the Tennis Racquet
As the game of tennis evolved, so did the need for racquets with bigger and faster heads.
The head size of a tennis racquet is really the measurement of the striking area and is recorded in square inches. Wooden racquets were about 60 to 65 square inches. Metal racquets which surfaced in the late 70's, gave the world the ability to create wider and larger heads. The Head Company launched the Prince Advantage, the Prince Classic, and the Prince Pro. These racquets had heads measuring 80 to 90 square inches with open string patterns that created larger sweet spots (area of the strings where the ball can be effortlessly struck with most power). It gave players the ability to use more power and put more spin on the ball, but it sacrificed stability and control. This was perfect for beginners. Other companies began offering what was called mid-size racquets with heads of 95 square inches.
The 1980's witnessed the launch of mid plus size racquets with striking areas or heads of 95 to 105 square inches. Even more power and a bit more control were rendered because new lightweight materials like graphite, titanium, Kevlar, and boron were being used to make the frames. Next in line were the oversized with heads measuring 105 to 120 square inches.
The last group is the super oversize with heads averaging between 120 and 135 square inches. Some have even larger striking areas than that. The standard allowed in professional tournaments however, is 135 square inches. Professional and advanced players prefer to play with the smaller heads because they have better control of their shots.
