Evolv's New, Red Bandit: A Climbing Shoe Review
This is a review of the new version of Evolv's Bandit rock shoe.
The Evolv Bandit has been one of my preferred climbing shoes for a few years. Evolv has recently upgraded the Bandit. They have not drastically altered the shoe, but the new version has undergone some mild tweaks, the most noticeable being a red stripe that is supposed to add padding and support the shoe's structure. The upper is now double layered and perforated to increase the strength of the shoe's structure while also being very breathable. Another small difference is that the heel cup has been redesigned in order to improve comfort.
The Red Bandit is an all-around performer, designed to be stiff enough for micro edging but sensitive enough for dicey smears. It is a laceup shoe with a microfiber lining and a stiff, 2.2 mm full-length midsole. This new Bandit is, like the old one, a synthetic shoe that will not stretch out with use, so do not size it too small and expect it to loosen up.
My Experience
I wore the new Bandit in a size 9. I wanted it to be comfortable for long days filled with long climbs, and I wanted my toes to be straight for comfort while jamming in cracks. The shoe is definitely comfortable; and, I can even wear it indefinitely. It is perhaps a bit too large, and I find myself really cranking down on the laces sometimes. Interestingly, I have a pair of the old Bandits in the same size, and they are tighter. When the two pairs are held up together, the size difference is quite noticeable. I do not know if this difference is a result of the redesign or if something else happened. I have had a weird size difference between the very similar Evolv Predator and the Evolv Talon before, so it could be a problem with Evolv's quality control. Regardless, Evolv is still my favorite producer of climbing shoes. You can check out their products, including the Bandit, at www.evolvesports.com.
Bottom Line
I like the new Bandit. It performs well, is comfortable, and even looks a little snazzy. The Red Bandit smears well, jams well, and edges well. It is an all around performer, but it excels on vertical faces and crack climbs. If this shoe fits your foot and your climbing needs, then I definitely recommend it.
