Why Nintendo Wii is Overrated

I find myself disappointed to hear so many people talking about how amazing Nintendo Wii is. Sure, it's a lot of fun, but in the end, it doesn't stack up to the competition.

For the first week or so, having the Wii was beyond awesome. We actually followed the Wii Sports workout plans and had a few bowling tournaments on the side. My roommate spent about a week of his life on The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. I stood pat with a busy schedule and Wii Sports interspersed. As time progressed, we continued to love the system. Then one day I saw the light, and reality set in:

There is a reason why the Wii is so cheap; it is a cheap system.

This is why:

Overall Presentation:
While Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 truly went to the next generation in creating their systems, Nintendo merely stuck around and tweaked the controllers. The Wii graphics are not impressive for a new system. They closely resemble Gamecube, and do nothing even near rivaling the other new systems. Zelda: Twilight Princess is a prime example. Zelda has always been such a beautifully presented series, and the gameplay in Twilight Princess sticks to those standards. But for being the newest "up-to-date" Zelda game, the presentation could be so much better. As a PS2 owner, I recently bought Final Fantasy XII, an installment to a series with similar quality standards to that of Zelda. The game itself came out just before Twilight Princess, but on a system made six years earlier. This is disappointing, because graphically, the games look nearly identical despite Wii coming out just this year and being considered a "next generation console."

If you want a more direct comparison, Ultimate Alliance was released for all three next gen systems. Gametrailers.com did a video comparison of the game for each system. Wii is left looking like an infant, while PS3 and Xbox show their graphical beauty.

The Myth of the Virtual Console:
While the gaming community is well aware of this, several members of the public are not. There is a myth that Wii is the only system with a virtual console, but all three systems have one! Yes, that means you can download classics for each system. I do admit, however, that Wii has a better selection of downloadable games, but in PS3's case, if you want old Genesis games, buy the newly released PS2 Genesis Collection for $20. Xbox also offers several collection discs, and because of backwards compatibility for each system, this is just as good as downloading. Wii's virtual console games are not much cheaper either, if cheaper at all. The prices for each system's virtual console are extremely comparable and they each have relatively comparable selection of games as well.

Control Scheme Always Good?
This is a debate I've had with several people, and was actually defending Wii originally, but then realized how wrong I was. Wii uses its motion controller for basically every game. For example: In Zelda, every time you wish to attack an enemy, you must literally swipe the controller like a sword. Now, for hack n' slash games which were once unofficially dubbed "button mashers," do you really want to spend an hour straight of flicking your wrist? Or for the hardcore gamers, even longer? Sometimes you might want to just sit back in a chair and play a game, and not have to worry about constantly being motion sensored. Well, with Wii it's either motion sensor or it's not. You don't get an option, and this one time "novelty" turns into nothing but an annoyance after awhile.

Unique Controls Aren't So Unique:
On the note of the control schemes, I would like to point out that the Wiimote isn't quite as unique as it's made out to be. In case you are uninformed, the PS3 controller is wireless and motion-sensor compatible as well. Now, while Sony did not release titles at launch like Wii Sports, they will have several coming out later. One of the more notable games is Warhawk: A flight sim where the player controls the plane by use of the motion sensor on the controller. This is significant because once the PS3's motion sensor control catches on, Wii will lose the one facet that allows it to be graphically and powerfully inferior to PS3 and Xbox 360.

PS3 and Xbox Still Getting Underway:
Something often overlooked at launch time is that these systems are just starting out. For PS3, developers are still figuring out how to take advantage of the cell processor and blu-ray, and for all three systems, developers are still looking for a way to reach optimal performance with the three systems. Every system that has ever come out improves drastically by its latter years. Once developers understand how to fully utilize the 360 and PS3 mechanics the games will be far superior to that of Wii. The Wii will progress over time, but it simply does not have the potential to progress as much as the other two. The hardware cannot even compete with that of PS3 and 360, and unless a second Wii comes out in a couple of years, expect Nintendo to once again find themselves out of the shuffle in the long run.
