How to Serve in Tennis Simply and Successfully
Tennis can be a hard sport if you are not used to it, so here is how to successfully serve a tennis ball.
The first thing you want to do to successfully serve a tennis ball is to know where your feet should be placed. You should be standing behind the back line on the tennis court near the center. To get into the serving stance you need to have your back feet parallel to the base line and your front foot at a 45 degree angle to that line. Both of your feet should be stretched out to about shoulder-length so that you can keep a great balance. Stretch your arms over your head and look at how high up your wrist is in the air, this is the height you want to hit the ball at. You need to make sure you do this so that you can hit the ball at just the right time for your height.
Hold the ball near the "V" shape on the tennis racket and then bend your knees slightly so that you get good leverage. Look at the tennis court so you can get a mental image of the court and where you want the tennis ball to end up, this will help you serve the tennis ball with confidence. After you bend your knees it is now time to toss the ball into the air as high as you can making sure you keep your eye on the ball. Your wrist is one of the most important parts of the body when it comes to serving the tennis ball successfully. Make sure you know what position you want the ball to go in and make your wrist go in that position. Whatever position your wrist is in will determine where the ball goes and the direction the tennis ball goes in as well. When the ball gets to the height you had measured using your arms stretched out, hit the ball in a slightly downward angle. Make sure you start off hitting the ball slowly at first so you can get a feel for the angles and the direction the tennis ball travels in. Once you have mastered the feel of striking the tennis ball slowly, you can gradually increase your serving speed.
One of the biggest aspects of serving a tennis ball is the mental aspect of serving the tennis ball over the net. No matter how tall you are you are probably going to be serving the tennis ball into the net a few times. The key to overcome this is to think you are going to serve the ball over the net before you even touch the court. Let your mind take control over your body and put your mentality into a positive mood. If you think you can serve the tennis ball over the net there is a greater chance you will actually serve the ball over the net. Always keep awareness of the tennis court and make a mental note of where the lines are on the edges. You need to keep the tennis ball within these lines or else your tennis serve will be considered out of bounds. As long as you keep this simple serving guide in mind, your tennis serve should become easier and more successful the longer you practice. Remember, the mental aspect in tennis and serving is just as important as the physical ability of the sport and the person participating in it.
