Tennis: The Perfect Serve

Just starting out, or already a strong tennis player? Either way, here are some great tips on how to improve the most common and worst bad habits when learning to serve a tennis ball. Improve your game now!

If not the most, then one of the most important techniques that a tennis player needs to know before starting a game against an opponent is how to correctly serve the tennis ball. A serve can affect the entire game. It affects whether the ball with reach over the net and into the other player's court and it will affect how hard the opponent can hit the tennis ball back to you in order for you to hit it back to them and gain a point.

Most Common Habits When Learning to Serve

1. Not enough of a forehand grip.
2. Trying to hit the ball with too much strength.
3. Hitting the ball downwards, toward the net.
4. Looking at the ground while serving.

Ways to Improve Your Serve

1. How to Stand

When preparing for a tennis ball serve, always stand at the basic stance. Your feet should be shoulder-width apart from one another and your front foot should be kept a few inches into the court so that you do not cross over the line and create a fault. You should always keep your knees bent!

2. Your Grip

Always grip your tennis racket on the very end, where the stem is wrapped. DO NOT hold just the tip though; make sure that you have a good enough grip on the stem to hold your tennis racket straight and to give it enough force to hit the ball where you want it to go.

3. Holding the Tennis Ball

When holding the tennis ball and preparing to make a perfect serve, always hold the tennis ball in the palm of your hand, between your thumb and all four of your other fingers.

4. Tossing the Ball

Always toss the ball in front of your and a little bit to the right of the shoulder that you are holding the racket with. Never release the ball too early or too late. Always plan to release the ball when the arm that you are throwing the ball with is at its full length, stretching out in front of you.
