Five Winners from the 2020 Women’s Tennis Season: A Fan’s View
These five women had the best seasons on the WTA tennis tour this season.
Serena Williams - How could this list start with any other player? At the French Open this year Williams suffered a stunning first-round defeat. Here is how she responded: she played six more tournaments for the year and won five of them, including the trifecta of Wimbledon (her 5th), the London Olympics and the U.S. Open. Williams also won doubles titles at Wimbledon and the Olympics. She was 71-5 and won nine tournaments in singles and doubles combined. She had a phenomenal year.
Victoria Azarenka - Azarenka dominated the first part of the 2020 season. She took over the #1 ranking after winning her first Grand Slam title, at the Australian Open in January. She won the first four tournaments she entered this year and was 26-0 before she lost. She made the final of the U.S. Open and won twice more late in the year. Azarenka will go into 2020 as the top-ranked woman player in the world.
Maria Sharapova - Sharapova concentrated her winning in a small window in 2020, but she took home some serious hardware and $6.5 million this year. She won in Stuttgart, Rome and Roland Garros, the last win completing her career Slam. She made six more finals, including the Australian Open, the London Olympics and the year-end WTA Championships. Sharapova finished the year with a singles record of 60-11. At 25 years old and ranked #2 in the world, she appears in the prime of her career.
Agnieszka Radwanska - Radwanska won three times in 2020 (Dubai, Miami and Brussels) and she made her first Grand Slam final. She pushed Serena Williams to a third set in the Wimbledon final before Williams prevailed 6-1, 5-7, 6-2. Radwanska played a heavy schedule and finished with a singles record of 59-19 and a doubles mark of 7-7. The 23-year-old from Krakow will finish 2020 ranked #4 and having earned over $4 million this year.
Sara Errani - Errani makes my list not just for singles (she's ranked #6 in the world), but also for doubles. Let's take singles first. Errani won four times and made the French Open final, where she lost to Sharapova. She won 55 matches and earned over $2 million. That's a pretty good season right there. But add the doubles and Errani's season becomes outstanding. Playing with Roberta Vinci, Errani won eight times in doubles, including two Slams, and earned nearly $1 million more in doubles. She also reached #1 in the world in doubles in September. Errani will have a tough time topping her work in 2020.
