History Channels 'Vikings' Depicts the Start of the Norse Reign of Terror

"Vikings," the History Channel's first episodic television series, premiered on Sunday, March 3, 2020. The series starts at the very dawn of the Viking Age when the tall, vicious, blond Scandinavians descended on Europe for a two century reign of terror.

Some spoilers may follow.

The story of "Vikings" concerns a farmer named Ragnar who has developed a disagreement with his Jarl or chieftain Haraldson. Haraldson has been leading his people on raids to the east, along the Baltic coast. Ragnar believes that there are even richer lands to the west. To that end Ragnar has developed a new navigational tool based on a sun dial and has been working with a slightly crazy shipbuilder named Floki who seems to have developed the first ocean going long ship. This will allow the Norse to reach Britain, Ireland, and France.

The basic conflict stems from Haraldson's corrupt and high handed way of ruling and meting out justice, something Ragnar is challenging him about. The issue of where to sail to rape, loot, pillage, burn, and murder is just one aspect of a political struggle that looks to consume Ragnar's people as they prepare to become a terror onto Christendom.

Naturally "Vikings" is going to focus on that one aspect of Norse culture during the Dark Ages that involved their practice of raiding their neighbors and making off with just about everything they can carry. The Norse were also explorers and traders as well as farmers and did raiding more to supplement their income, as well as to satisfy a love for adventure, than as a main occupation. Sometimes their settled in the lands they pillaged, such as Ireland, Northern England, and Normandy in France.

Of course there was a reason that the plea, "From the fury of the Northmen, oh Lord deliver us!" was often heard in Western Europe as fleets of long ships came over the horizon. Being on the receiving end of Viking raids was not very much fun, at least until Christian Europe developed the military technology and the techniques to fight them off. They ultimately defeated the Vikings by converting them to Christianity, but that is beyond the scope of the History Channel series.

Still "Vikings" looks rather good and the story of how the Norse first began their depredations looks promising.
