Table Tennis Grips: Pros and Cons of the Shakehand and Penhold Grips
This article examines the different shakehand and penhold table tennis grips in detail, with advantages and disadvantages of each.
Table-Tennis Grip: The Shakehand Grip
The shakehand grip is held like a tennis racket, as if you are shaking somebody's hand. The index finger may or may not be extended onto the back of the blade for increased power. The shakehand is a more attack-oriented table-tennis grip, as it is easy to swing very hard using this grip. The main disadvantage of the shakehand grip is that it has a crossover point between the forehand and backhand shot where balls are difficult to return accurately.
Table-Tennis Grip: The Chinese Penhold Grip
The Chinese penhold grip was the traditional table-tennis grip for Asian players. To form the Chinese penhold grip, hold the racket so that the blade is facing the ground. Wrap your index finger and thumb around the handle, as if you were holding a pen. Curl your remaining three fingers around the back of the blade, so that your knuckles are touching the rubber. This table-tennis grip is more defensive, as it is not as easy to swing hard with this grip. Players generally remain closer to the table than shakehand players. The crossover point of the shakehand does not exist, as the forehand is always used. The main disadvantage of this table-tennis grip is a weak backhand side.
Table Tennis Grip: The Japanese Penhold Grip
The Japanese penhold grip is a variation on the penhold table-tennis grip. Form the Japanese penhold as if you were going to form the Chinese table-tennis grip. Rather than curling your remaining three fingers around the back of the blade, extend them so that the finger tips are touching the rubber. This allows for a more powerful stroke than with the Chinese penhold grip. Japanese penhold players are often defensive, but they can attack aggressively with the forehand. The advantages and disadvantages are the same as with the Chinese penhold grip.
Table Tennis Grip: The Reverse Penhold Backhand Grip
The reverse penhold backhand grip is held in the same manner as the Chinese penhold grip. The main difference with this table-tennis grip is that the backhand stroke may also be used for increased power and control on the backhand side. On most shots hit to the backhand side, the forehand stroke should still be used. When a powerful attack is possible however, the backhand stroke may be used effectively. The backhand stroke should not be used exclusively, as this creates the shakehand problem of the crossover point. The ability to effectively use the backhand stroke means that this table-tennis grip has fewer disadvantages than the other penhold grips. Many consider the reverse penhold backhand to be the best of all table-tennis grips.
