Tricks for that Campfire Halloween Story
Tired of those old campfire stories when the only background sounds came from crickets? Thought so. Here are multiple tricks to use to spruce up your Halloween campfire story.
After everyone sits around the toasty fire with a beer in hand or a marshmallow on the stick, prepare them for a tale unlike before. You'll need to know what tricks to use for your Halloween story. Which means, get your festive Halloween ducks in a row for the campfire frenzy by using some of these tricks of the Halloween trade.
Campfire frenzy.
Trick one: You'll need a fish line and objects to attach. A clear fishing line that someone pulls from a hidden location can allow things to move in the night. Tangle leaves, tie bells, bottles, metal utensils or other sound making objects to the fish line. As the story continues, so does the objects from multiple locations. Simply wrap one fish line around an object to direct the fish line towards the opposite direction. Have someone pull the line. At the same time the same person should pull the other line which is fed towards another path into the campfire scene.
Trick two: Baby monitors hidden under leaves with a hidden person at the controls gives the story background sound. Chains clanking, rubbing metal, cylinder swirl or marbles in glass can bring nice sound effects to the story. Another great reason to have a baby monitor. If you do not have a baby monitor then try a two-way.
Trick three: Someone throwing something deep within the woods or cracking two boards together can offer that startling surprise to ears. Loud sounds can do that.
Trick four: Rolled up black socks can look like rodents in the dark to those at the campfire tale. Just place a few rolled up black socks where the light of the campfire dims before the guests arrive. Toy snakes and large fake spiders are also festive creatures of the dark.
Tip: If you plan on making ice with fake insects, please wash the insects thoroughly before dumping in ice trays.
Trick five: Have someone honk their horn at a specific time from a road nearby to go along with the story line. Horns and/or a large deep bell ring from a distance is not such a bad idea. You can always record the sound online via iPod (or music electronic) and play the sound through a speaker.
Trick six: Paddles of a boat can come in handy during storytelling time. Smacking paddles into water can make a very loud sound. Like a beaver smacking a tail into the water. That sound could travel.
Trick seven: Another way to have a story go out in a bang is to place bamboo inside of a campfire. Do not place a long piece inside of the fire. After the bamboo burns it pops - really loud - like gunfire. Depending on the length, sometimes the bamboo pops more than once.
Trick eight: Have two people run around in the woods as you describe people lost in your story. You can even have them scream like something is wrong. Just make sure the two people don't get carried away. Officers can truly kill that story before it even gets to the killer part.
Trick nine: Water guns! That's right. Cold water misting from two directions at the listeners. Make sure the listeners do not get drenched. Just a split second spray from two directions is more than enough. You'll need two people to assist in that one.
Trick ten: Fire moves. Before setting up the fire for the campfire, place a fire safe blanket on the ground. Lay dirt and some stones above it. Center the logs for the fire. Tie two durable ropes to one side of the blanket. Hide the ropes and blanket corners under dirt and light rocks. Have a person find the ropes at a location and pull lightly (so that a fire isn't started outside of the campfire zone). The fire should slightly move. Keep doing it until someone notices. Then have the person stop pulling so that they can reach another location for the another trick.
Trick eleven: Have someone jump out of the darkness You can do this anywhere in the U.S. but Texas. Why? A racing heart and a large gun.
Trick twelve: Have zombies walking among the forest area. One zombie would be down right creepy. Isn't that what you're going for this Halloween? If you have no idea how a zombie works just visit Lori Lane's zombie vault.
Trick thirteen: If the story is about a phone call then have someone call a person at the campfire while they are sitting there. The voice and words should reflect the story.
Tip: Not many storytellers require listeners to wear a blindfold. Not a good idea to apply with a Halloween storytelling moment.
Stories can include a killer on the loose, a wild animal attack, ghosts of the land (or water), alien abduction, cannibals, vampires, wolves or any evil, disturbing, distracting and deadly plot. You could twist in some Jason action or go full Freddy. The goal is a hallow scream for Halloween!
