Equal Pay for Men and Women Tennis Players
After years of holding out, the prize money for the men and the women will finally be equal at Wimbledon.
Wimbledon club chairman Tim Phillips told Fox Sports.com, "It's good news for all women players, and recognizes their major contribution to Wimbledon and we also believe it will serve as a positive encouragement for women in sports." Phillips also had to recognize that 55 percent of Wimbledon's spectators are now women.
It is unclear why it took so long for women's tennis to be finally recognized as the big draw that it is. There can be a very strong and viable argument that women's tennis has had as much notoriety as men's tennis. Tennis fans packed center court to watch Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, and Steffi Graf play as much as they did to see Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe, Andre Agassi, Bjorn Borg, or Pete Sampras.
The rationale offered was that the men play a best of five set match where the women only play a best of three. Also the claim was that women made more money overall because the women played doubles where the top men did not: nice try guys. Perhaps women's' sports such as the WNBA can make a case for unequal pay because women's professional basketball hasn't reached the level of popularity the NBA enjoys, the same argument can't be used for women's tennis.
When women entered the professional boxing world it was a different story. At boxing events there is usually a couple of "under card" fights usually involving lesser-known fighters in shorter round fights. When women's professional boxing was getting its start, they would appear as part of the "under card" as well. Women's boxing became so popular; the women were getting paid more than the men were for the same under card appearances. Whether you enjoy women's boxing or not, the women were putting fans in the stands.
Equal pay at Wimbledon won't add any more credibility to women's tennis; the credibility is obvious in the high quality of play they have given tennis fans over the years. In some ways, women's sports are very refreshing to watch because you don't have the behavioral problems, which are becoming more and more prevalent in all men's professional sports.
Its great to see the women at Wimbledon finally getting the pay they deserve. It's been said many times by many people that you have to pay your dues first: they paid theirs many times over.
