25 Ways to Spring Clean and Refresh Your Home Without Triggering Asthma or Allergies

May is Allergy and Asthma Awareness Month! Spring cleaning can be wearisome for asthmatics and allergy sufferers: these 25 unique tips that, including yoga breathing and tennis balls, are quick, easy and cheap ways to help you breath easy this season.

1. Do some deep, alternate nostril breathing before you begin to get your lungs full of good, clean oxygenated air. This is a yoga technique, generally practiced to 'balance' the mind and soul; however, it also forces one to focus, fully, on evenly inflating the lungs. Try to consciously keep even breathing as you clean. When possible, breathe through your nose to further control the access allergens have to your airways. If you are unfamiliar with alternate nostril breathing, refer to the following link:

2. Keep the fresh air moving. Open all windows, turn on (clean) fans and open all vents (note, if your home has accumulated a lot of dust, take care of that first with some of the suggestions below).

3. Using warm, lightly soaped water, rinse out the removable plastic hoses on vacuum cleaners prior (and post) use. Allow the hose to dry fully before using it (as allergens and dust stick easily to damp surfaces)

4. Use a fabric refresher (the ones with allergen reducers are ideal) on mattresses and leave for approximately 2 minutes before vacuuming to remove excess dust. The refresher doesn't only make your mattress smell great, but will also 'weigh down' any dust that may begin to fly when you begin to vacuum. Do the same with large rugs

5. When purging and decluttering, use bins (such as clean large, plastic garbage containers) with flapping and back-closing openings, so the dust and allergens that are sure to become airborne are contained inside. Before closing up the inner bag, leave the bin for an hour or two, then mist lightly with a soap/water solution before tying closed etc. to weigh down dust.

6. If your asthma is triggered, mainly by outdoor allergens but you want to keep the fresh air flowing while you clean, use the local weather forecast to see exactly when things will be warming up for good. To eliminate the outdoor allergens from coming in while you clean, open up your windows and vents on the last cooler day of the season while allergens are still at a low level.

7. Always wear a dust mask. These can be found easily, everywhere from allergy specialty shops right down to dollar stores, by the bulk box. Don't reuse masks (but do put them in your recycling box!)

8. Use the dryer and a few tennis balls to 'fluff' pillows, comforters and throw cushions. Doing it this way keeps things super plump and keeps irritants that may be agitated and airborne inside the dryer drum. For detailed instructions, see

9. Only 'wet dust'-avoid feather dusters and dry dust clothes completely. Use damp cloths and a bucket of water (for large jobs) or a small spray bottle of water.

10. If your children are not asthmatic, use their energy to help 'beat' rugs. Hang the rugs (or even large blankets) outside and give the kids clean tennis, soccer or basketballs to toss into them from a distance to beat out the dust. If the asthmatic in your family has a good arm and can keep a good distance, they can join in as well.

11. Break up the chores. Don't dust, vacuum and purge all on the same day. Divide a major cleaning up over a week or two to minimize the allergens that will be free floating in the home simultaneously.

12. Replace any boxes of tissue that may have been sitting around for a length of time, or whose plastic at the top has been compromised. Dust and allergens accumulates inside tissue boxes. Buy new tissue (with a pretty spring-themed box!). Some brands (Royale does a great one) offer tissue that is "certified hypo allergenic", and are not that much costlier.

13. Don't vacuum draperies, rather, in as non-jarring a fashion as possible remove them from windows, and either hand wash, use the delicate cycle in the washing machine or even do a rinse and low speed spin to clean up. Many lighter fabrics or sheers can simply be hung to dry right back on the window, while other heavier materials will require a delicate or no-heat tumble in the dryer.

14. Similarly, don't vacuum dirty blinds. Wet wash them. Smaller horizontal blinds can be removed from their mounts, easily and submerged in the bathtub with warm soapy water to remove dust and dirt.

15. Keep your fast-acting inhaler in a pocket or pouch on your person for the duration of your cleaning and refreshing. At the first signs of any difficulty breathing, use your inhaler and prevent an asthma attack before it begins (obviously, remove yourself from the trigger area for a time as well)

16. Wet mop verandas and stone or paved walkways instead of sweeping. If you've got large areas that need to be cleaned and the physical exertion may trigger your asthma, rent a power washer and get shooting! Power washers also work wonders on dirty garage floors.

17. If your property requires pesticide application, ideally, hire someone to do it for you. Often college students will do this cheaply and well. Arrange for it to be done on a day with little wind forecasted, and close all windows and vents, tightly. If you must do it yourself, try to do the application when it is cooler (heat often increases the potency of the asthma triggering fumes), or at dusk when there is likely to be less activity around the home to stir things up. Wear a mask, always. Ask your home center what kind of pesticide is likely to be the least toxic, and which one allows for the greatest distance between yourself and the actual chemicals (i.e.-can you attach a large garden hose and apply it, spraying very far out in front on you, or must you be leaned down onto your lawn with the applicator a few feet from your face?) Schedule a full day for this, or break a large job up over a couple of days to reduce the intensity of the stress on your lungs.

18. Do not dispose of non-green cleaning products or toxic substances of any kind on your own. Dumping old window washer or windshield fluid down the drain can release a lot of potential asthma triggering fumes. Collect these items (along with old paints, aerosol cans etc.) in a large box and bring them to a local disposal facility. Some communities even offer pick up services for these items

19. Add green plants to your rooms! Non-flowering green plants look spring time spiffy, are easy to keep and actually purify the air, which make them a great addition to any home. For a great list of the healthiest green plants to clear the air, check out: .

20. Use eco-friendly, green cleaning products. Some of the more popular lines include Sun and Earth Products, Simple Green, Eco-Safe, Seventh Generation and Shaklee. Even better, make your own basic cleaning solutions and abrasives using water and natural ingredients available in your pantry or fridge (baking soda, salt, vinegar etc).

21. Use a vacuum and not a broom to get the cobwebs. Cobwebs are sticky and the effort (and exposure to allergens) required to remove them from broom and brush bristles is a potential asthma/allergy trigger.

22. As part of your spring refresher and cleanup, keep a watchful eye out of mold. If any mold is discovered during your cleaning, inside or out, call a professional to assess what kind of mold it is and how extensive it has become (often mold that is visible is an indicator of other, hidden growth). Don't attempt to remove it on your own as disturbing mold can very quickly release toxic spores that can trigger a serious asthmatic or allergic episode.

23. Use a Hepa filter or double filtered vacuum bags to reduce the dust stirred up while vacuuming

24. Put new zippered, impermeable (to dust and moisture) mattress and pillow covers on all bedding to control mites and dust

25. Immediately after doing your cleanup, leave your home for a few hours to let any possible airborne triggers die down. Relax! Then, enjoy the feeling of walking into a spotless, fresh home that is all ready to greet the new season with you...without asthma or allergies.
