Summer Tennis Programs in Phoenix

Tennis is one of the few sports that can be enjoyed all year 'round, even in Phoenix. Check out some of these opportunities for tennis leagues and lessons.

Tennis is one of the few sports that can be enjoyed all year 'round, even in Phoenix in the middle of summer, when most people are huddled in their air-conditioned homes and offices with fans perched in every corner. There are lots of summer tennis programs in Phoenix, ranging from enormous leagues with regular tournaments to just-for-fun gatherings of tennis lovers.

USTA Southwest Central Arizona Tennis League

We'll start with the biggest summer tennis program in Phoenix, the Southwest Central Arizona chapter of the United States Tennis Association. There are actually several leagues under this umbrella, each categorized by age, such as Adult, Senior, and Super Senior.

In order to take part in this summer tennis program, you must be a member of the USTA, and you'll need to pay court fees for each of the Phoenix area tournaments you enter. The leagues sometimes play indoors, at local tennis centers and courts, but the majority of games are played outside.

ATA Adult Doubles League

The Arizona Tennis Association has a doubles league that operates throughout the year. The summer session starts earlier in the day than other seasons because of the heat; men's daytime and women's daytime leagues play at 7:30 a.m. instead of 9 a.m.

You can join an ATA team in Phoenix or you can create your own team with friends or relatives who want to join. The roster must include at least six players, and team registration is $25.00 per session. The summer league session starts in early June and ends in early August.

City of Phoenix

Many city-run community centers in Phoenix have tennis facilities and have started their own leagues, most of which are casual and structured for the whole family. The Rose Mofford Sports Complex on N. 25th Avenue and the Mountain View Community Center on E. Grovers are just two examples.

There is also Phoenix Tennis Center on N. 21st Avenue, which has 22 lighted public courts, a pro shop, and plenty of other amenities. Mountain View has 11 lighted courts, plus USTA and ATA leagues available for you to join. Court fees at City of Phoenix facilities range from $1 to $2, so practicing is never going to break the bank.

If you aren't yet ready to join a league, you might also consider taking lessons. The City of Phoenix tennis programs include lessons with tennis pros who can help you develop your form and power before you engage in competition.
