It can be so frustrating when you have a big lead in a tennis match and you blow it. But you can still come out on top! There are some crucial things to keep in mind when this happens to you. If you stay focused, you can still get that W!
You're doing well in a match. Maybe you're up a break or even a set. Then, all of a sudden, your opponent starts roaring back. Your confidence begins to dwindle just like the healthy lead that you once had. It happens even to the best players. Serena Williams routinely has a rough match where she has to come back from a losing position. It's going to happen, especially if you play tennis tournaments.
There are ways to manage this. You've got to keep your head on straight. Yes, you have to work a little harder than you thought but with a few simple tips you'll put yourself in the position to get the win.
Ask Yourself Why
First, you need to figure out why your lead has gone the way of the dinosaurs. This is important, because your approach to the rest of the match is dependent upon the answer.
Is your opponent back in the match because they are playing better? Maybe their serve wasn't working earlier on in the match and that allowed you some easy breaks. Or maybe their favorite forehand is now finding the court instead of the fence. If this is the case, don't beat yourself up too much. Your lead was more of a gift than heist. Your opponent wasn't playing up to par, but don't let their sudden resurgence discourage you. Continue to play the way that got you the lead in the first place, with some minor adjustments. If your opponents second serve is working a little better now, respect it and step back a little. Don't let pride get in the way if this is the situation. Remember that your opponent still has to win the match...don't just pack it in.
Or maybe it's the opposite. Maybe you started donating a lot more gifts to your opponent in the form of unforced errors. Perhaps your lead caused you to get lax and you technique wavered...and you let your opponent back in the match. If this is the case, figure out where the wheels fell off and start putting your game back together. If your serve isn't hitting the box, take some pace off. Whatever could've happened didn't. You must focus your energies on playing your best tennis in the presence, not in some past that clearly didn't happen. Make peace with yourself for losing that lead and go forward. You'll find that you'll be able to play better when you aren't focused on your apparent failure. You're the same player that got that lead. You're more than capable of winning this match regardless of your opponent's comeback.
