The Proper Way to Grip the Tennis Racket in the Forehand Drive

Learn how to grip the tennis racket properly when performing the forehand drive.

Several grips are used by the more advanced players and professionals, but most of these are only slight variations of the grip described here. This description will confine preliminary instruction to the Eastern forehand grip, which will be referred to as the "forehand grip". As you advance, you may make slight adjustments and variations to suit your individual preferences.

1. Rest the throat of your racket in the fingers of your left hand, thumb on top. The face of the racket is perpendicular to the ground, the racket head "Standing on edge," with the tip of the racket pointing to the net; the butt of the racket is in the center of, and a few inches away from, your body.

2. Place the palm of your hand against the back plate of the grip (fingers and thumbs extended) so that the palm and face of the racket are both on the same plane.

3. Close your hand and "shake hands with your racket." The grip must be firm enough for control but not to tight or rigid. Spread the fingers, making certain that the index finger is apart from the middle finger and is bent to form a "modified trigger finger."

4. Wrap your thumb around the grip until it touches the outside of your middle finger. The bottom of the base knuckle of your index finger is on the back plate of the grip. Looking down at the grip, you will see that the V formed by the thumb and index finger lines up with the center of the top plate or the top right edge of the grip.

5. This is your starting point. To allow for differences in the hand and the racket handle, adjust your hands slightly so that the racket feels comfortable.

With this grip, the face of the racket becomes an extension of the palm of your hand, wrist, and forearm. Holding the racket with this grip, turn your hand and wrist over and under, and note that the face of the racket makes similar changes. Bend and straighten your wrist and note the changes in the racket face. Close your eyes and see if you can determine where the racket is facing after each movement.

You have now taken the first step in learning the forehand drive. This grip may feel strange at first, but with practice, the strangeness will disappear. Avoid the tendency to shift your grip to the right, under the handle. Periodically, go over the description and make any necessary adjustments to return to your original grip.
