USTA Southern Boys and Girls Closed Tennis Tournament Held in Middle Georgia
Junior tennis players compete for USTA Southern Titles
ATUTHOR'S NOTE: I wrote the original article and did the reporting.
Junior tennis players from across the South packed their tennis racquets and water bottles and headed to Macon to participate the USTA Southern Boys and Girls 14 Closed, where play started this past weekend.
Following state-level tournaments, 120 boys and 120 girls in the 14 and under age division qualified for the sectional tournament, hosted by the Macon Tennis Association and the tennis division of the Macon-Bibb County Parks and Recreation Department, which is providing two of the four sites needed to conduct the tournament.
Among those playing in the tournament are Macon,(Ga.) twins Miller and Michael Durham. The pair punched their Southern tickets earlier this month when they qualified during the state championships, also held in Macon.
The twins, who train at the Craig Jones Academy at Idle Hour Country Club, remained alive in consolation play through Monday afternoon before being knocked out of the tournament. Both racked up two back-draw singles wins before their exit.
"It felt good," said Miller Durham of his consolation round wins. "We've been working really hard, and it starts paying off."
Michael Durham, whose final match in the tournament was a 6-4, 6-2 loss to Christopher Wilkins, said he enjoyed having the home court advantage.
"The guy was pretty good," Michael Durham said of his final opponent. "(He was) really solid. He made everything … even when I rolled him off the court. He'd make the ball and start the point over. He'd hit a good shot or I'd just miss."
In doubles, the Durham twins lost their first-round match to a Kentucky doubles team, Luke Least and Adam Slone, 8-3.
"We both had two good singles wins," Miller Durham said. "I don't know if we were focused enough to go back and play. We weren't mentally prepared."
Birmingham Ala. resident, Daryn Ellison, still alive and kicking in the consolation round, sent Samantha Dearing packing after defeating Dearing 6- 3; 7-5.
"I feel really good," said Ellison in a post-match interview. "I've been staying hydrated." To help combat the heat Ellison takes electrolytes before, during and after matches. "I don't think about the heat while I'm playing," she said.
Haley Harmin, from Vestavia, Ala. lost her first main draw match but still remains in consolation round competition.
"I was a little disappointed in myself," Harmin said of her main draw loss. "We split sets and I had two match points. It was 9-7 in the match tiebreak and I lost four straight points." Harmin didn't let her first match loss interfere with her continued play. "I knew it wasn't over and I still had a chance. (I) kept trying to think positively for my next matches."
While all players hope to bring home a trophy, sometimes, securing a main draw win can bring satisfaction. Will Harper, from Suwanee, Ga. played a total of four matches. He defeated Jacob Lorino 6-1; 6-2 in his first main draw match this past Saturday. Harper relied on his 'step-up' forehand to gain his win.
"I was taking some balls early when he would pop one up," said Harper. "I was using that shot to get a lot of free points."
The tournament is scheduled to run through Friday at John Drew Smith Tennis Center, Tattnall Tennis Center, The Jaime Kaplan Tennis Center at Stratford Academy and the Mercer University tennis courts.
