Tennis Tips: Making Serving and Volleying Work for You

Want to serve and volley? This article will give you tips on how to add this skill to your tennis game.

Most coaches would dissuade their pupils from copying off of the pros. However, emulating professional players can be a wise move if you use some wisdom. It's all about understanding your limitations as a player and prospering translating those skills in a way that works for you.

Let's start with the serve and volley style of tennis. It's a dying breed, and even those that use it only use it sparingly. It can take years for this style to mature, but there are some great benefits to using this style of play. Following are some things to keep in mind when attempting to add serve and volley to your game.

Surprise

If anything, following your serve up to the net adds an element of surprise to your opponent's return game. Whether you are actually an adept serve and volley player doesn't matter, it gives your opponent something to think about when they are returning. They still have to adjust themselves to pass you at the net.

So don't think that if you aren't all the way there yet with your skills that you need to stay back. You may be bluffing, but they don't know that. Throw in some serve and volley in various points of the game and you'll keep your opponent guessing.

Serving Around the Box

You need to get a good serve going. Your serve doesn't necessarily need to be a bomb like Andy Roddick's, however. A sound delivery with proper technique will do the trick. Learn how to hit solid serves in all areas of the box with different spins. A solid slice out wide should be a shot that you're constantly working on. Of course, if you can hit a bombing serve, do it. Just remember: the faster you hit your serve, the faster it will come back to you. It's always easier to past someone than to hit through someone. Try to use your serve to get yourself in position.

Positioning

You'll also need to work on your transition game. Learning how to get to the net and how to position yourself might be more important that having excellent volleys. A not so great volley that is directed into to the best spot in the court will always be better than a volley hit when one is in a bad position.

A big part of improving your travel to the net is by being prepared. Once you decide that you are going to serve and volley, fully commit yourself to it. Don't be tentative. Practice serving and coming to the net with a split step afterward. After a while that sequence of movements will become natural to you.

Volley

Of course, you want to work on your volleys. More times than not, the issue isn't learning how to put some shtick on the volley; it's learning how to hit volleys in slightly uncomfortable positions. The stretch volleys, the balls that will be hit at your feet, and the half-volleys. Making yourself comfortable with those shots will make your net game that much better. Make sure that you work on your forehand volley as that shot is more difficult than the backhand volley.

Still, as said before, bad volleys hit in good places are better than good volleys hit in bad places. For example, you hit a solid backhand volley, but it is hit right back at the opponent. That gives them an easier time to hit a passing shot. However, if you hit that volley away from them, but it doesn't have as much knife on it, they still have to move to it. Make your opponent earn every shot they get.

Overhead

Once you make it to the net, it's inevitable that you'll encounter a lob. This is where an overhead comes into play. Don't just practice hitting an overhead; practice moving back to hit it. You'll usually have to adjust in order to hit a solid overhead anyway. Do your best to make the overhead a kill shot. It will make your opponents think twice before throwing another lob over your head.
