Tips to Make Your Tennis Serve More Effective

Even though you may not have a booming serve, don't fret! You can use your serve wisely just like the pros do! Keep reading this article, and you'll learn how to get that most out of any serve that you have!

Seeing serves like that can also be depressing, especially if you don't have the ability to hit one. It may make you feel as if you'll never be able to progress your serving game. Your serve may more closely resemble a power puff than a pistol. But if that's the case, don't worry! Even though you may not have a booming serve like those players that I mentioned, don't fret! You can use your serve wisely just like the pros do! Keep reading this article, and you'll learn how to get that most out of any serve that you have!

Get It In

Even if you can't improve the power of your serve right away, you can definitely work on its consistency. The thing that can hurt you the most on the serve is if you never get it in the box. Double faults can suck the life out of any service game, and it gives your opponents easy points.

Do your best to get that first serve in. Even if it's not a bomb, just work on getting a decent first serve percentage. It's more important to get a good first serve percentage then it is to hit a bunch of hard serves, especially at the club level.

Here's how to get a better sync on that serve: Get some balls and work on your serve by yourself. Try this drill: hit ten serves in a row in a box. If you miss one, start over. This will help you get a serving rhythm that will eventually translate to matches.

Work on a Good Second Serve

The old adage is true: you're only as good as your second serve. Most club players are taught the phrase "first serve: react. Second serve: attack." Most folks' eyes become huge at the prospect of hitting a return winner of your second serve. Since that is the case, you should spend time practicing it. Find a teaching pro that can help you develop a good slice and kick serve that you can hit on second deliveries. You can even look up "second serve tips" on You-tube to find some good instruction.

Bulls Eye

Even if you don't have overwhelming power on your serve, what you have can be very effective if you hit it towards your opponent's weakness. Figure out what your opponent can't do and hit a serve to make them do that. Roger Federer is a great example of this. While he can hit his serve hard, it's his serve's accuracy that makes it great.

If your opponent isn't good moving around the court, make sure to hit your serve out wide in the deuce court. If they don't move their feet, jam them by hitting the serve right at them. Look at their position on the return. Do inch toward one side? Hit it towards the other.

If you're still learning how to aim, here's a simple way to do it. Divide the service box into two halves. If you want to serve up the middle to the deuce court, aim toward the right half of the box. As you get better you can start aiming closer to the line.

Juice It Up

When you get comfortable with the other aspects of serving, don't be afraid to give your first serve a good ol' crack once and a while. Don't do it when you're down break point or anything like that, but doing it every once in a while during a match will help you get more comfortable with hitting a bigger serve. Even an extra 10 miles per hour will be enough to throw your opponent off.
