British Tennis Funding Withheld Due to Lack of Participation: A Fan’s Reaction
A look at the recent news that British tennis funding will be restricted.
British tennis has been hit with a blow following having £10million of funding withheld from Sport England. The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) has so far been unable to show levels of participation at the grassroots level to satisfy Sport England.
A quick glance at the professional game shows that there is some promise with a few select players, but the game as a whole is not performing as well as many other countries. The men's game offers a very quick and accurate representation of that.
The rankings show us that Andy Murray has obviously performed extremely well, and it's fantastic that he can now call himself a Grand Slam champion. Therefore, there doesn't seem to be a problem in terms of producing a top player.
However, there is a major and quite legitimate concern about the level of quality that is behind the third-ranked Briton. It is an appalling state of affairs that the next best British male player is ranked 246 in the world. This is especially true when compared with other countries that have a number of different players ranked within the top 20 or 50 in the world.
The women's game is in some ways better because we have top very talented young players in Heather Watson and Laura Robson ranked in and around the top 50. However, the next best player is ranked at a lowly 143.
It's difficult to know if the problems at the top of the professional game is purely down to a lack of participation at the grassroots level. However, I know from experience that when there is a problem at the top level it is usually down to a fundamental issue at the bottom.
I certainly think we should have more representation within the top 50, especially on the men's side of the game. Things look to be a little bit more positive on the women's side mainly due to the emergence of Heather Watson and Laura Robson. But overall, there is plenty of work to be done by Great Britain.
It's hard to ascertain if the problem is a lack of people taking up tennis, or purely a lack of tennis players of a certain quality. But this withhold of funding may act as a motivation for the LTA to get their house in order and find ways to encourage youngsters to take up the sport.
