How to Get Six-Pack Abs
Have you ever seen a person with fantastic abs and wondered how many sit-ups they do a day? The answer is none, or not very many. The truth is that it takes a variety of exercises along with some cardio to get those beach abs that everyone wants.
You can start by hitting all of the muscle groups. First the lower abs, which is where most people have the biggest problem. Hanging leg raises are a great exercise for this muscle group. Holding on to a pullup bar, raise your knees as high as they will go, and slowly lower them back down. Try to keep your knees tucked in towards your body, and try not to sway. Don't get too crazy with the number of sets or reps. 3 to 5 sets of 8 to 10 reps is ideal.
The next muscle group is the lower oblique. For this muscle group you can do a variation of the first exercise. When you pull your legs up, bring your knees all the way to your chest, and twist your lower body to the right. On the second rep, twist to the left and repeat. Use the same set and rep numbers.
The next muscle group is the middle and upper abdominals. Crunches are a very easy exercise for this group that requires no equipment. Lay on your back, and bend your legs to make a 90 degree angle. Your knees should be pointed skyward. With your hands behind your head, contract you abs until your shoulder blades are a few inches off the ground. Slowly lower yourself back down. Be sure not to pull yourself with your hands. Most people can do 10 crunches with little or no problem, so its ok to up the reps on this exercise.
The last muscle group is the upper and middle oblique. For this group, oblique crunches are ideal. These are done like traditional crunches, except when you come up, try to touch your left elbow to your right knee and vice versa. These can be done alternating or one side at a time. Almost anyone can do these, and it once again requires no equipment.
On your in between days is the best time to do some cardio. If your a runner, just remember to vary your routine. Running for a long distance is good, but there should also be some sprinting and calisthenics thrown in. There are also many other ways of doing cardio. Biking, jumping rope, and circuit training are great ways to break up the monotony.
I only mention one exercise for each muscle group. There are endless exercises for abs, so find the ones that suit you. Remember to vary your frequency and intensity. Your muscles will respond better to different exercises and reps. Remember when doing any exercise that form is the most important thing. It does no good to have great abs if you injure your back and can't walk.
