How a Real Wounded Warrior Destroyed a Fake One at a Congressional Hearing
Baulio Castillo, CEO of Strong Castle, Inc., an IRS contractor, once claimed a veteran’s benefit for an ankle sprain sustained while attending a military prep school. This did not sit well with Rep, Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill. according to the Daily Caller.
COMMENTARY | Baulio Castillo, CEO of Strong Castle, Inc., an IRS contractor, once claimed a veteran's benefit for an ankle sprain sustained while attending a military prep school. This did not sit well with Rep, Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill. according to the Daily Caller.
Duckworth has a rather personal reason for her scorn against Castillo, expressed during a congressional hearing concerning IRS abuses. According to her biography, Duckworth served in Iraq as a Blackhawk helicopter pilot, one of the first women to do so. She lost both of her legs and partial use of an arm thanks to having her helicopter hit by an RPG.
Castillo, claiming to be a wounded veteran, goes beyond someone padding his resume to get sympathy. By claiming to be a wounded warrior thanks to his minor football injury, Castillo was able to get his company designated as a VA Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business, which gave him special preference in getting federal contracts.
More important, as Duckworth pointed out, because people like Castillo are gaming the system, actual wounded warriors are having to wait to get their disabled status so that they can get benefits in exchange for often horrible injuries. Getting benefits is apparently a byzantine process and people like Castillo do not help matters.
It may not be against the law, as Duckworth suggests, but it sure ought to be. A number of possibilities come to mind.
First, the definition of what constitutes a service related disability needs to be tightened. A football injury that has not had much if any ill effects should not be a matter for the Veterans' Administration to bother with. If shame does not stop people like Castillo from doing what he did, awe of the angry law needs to be brought to bear.
One doesn't know if there is any triage for veterans caught in the backlog for disability benefits, but if not there might well should be. Someone who has been dismembered, like Duckworth, might need to get help quicker than someone with a lesser injury.
Finally the program that gives preference to businesses owned by disabled veterans needs revamping. There should be sanctions against people like Castillo who claim that a minor football injury is the same as having one's legs blown off or having PTSD in order to get government contracts.
