"Dancing with the Stars": The Ladies Fire Back
This article covers round one of the 2020 version of "Dancing with the Stars;" this time covering ladies night.
Again there were some surprises on the Tuesday, March 18th episode. Some of the women that I thought would nail their routines, were less than stellar while some that I questioned, delivered in spades.
Actress Shannon Elizabeth did well, but didn't bring down the house like some thought she might. While Marissa Jared Winokur was an adorable spitfire of energy on the dance floor, her technique left a little to be desired. Monica Seles, the wild card, seemed to let her nerves overcome her in the middle of the dance when she stiffened up and failed to follow through.
On the other hand, 60-plus Priscilla Presley proved that age is nothing more than a number as she commanded the dance floor with agility, grace, and fire. The two ladies who already own golden trophies - - Kristi Yamaguchi and Marlee Matlin - - went for gold once again.
Kristi looked as if she had been dancing all of her life even though her skating ability turned out to be a bit of a handicap because of the difference in how you use the feet and legs. However, her challenging routine looked like a piece a cake in the hands of a pro.
Even though Marlee can't hear the music, she certainly felt the rhythm, delivering what the judges pronounced a proper, well-choreographed cha cha. Her performance brought the audience to its feet.
Here is how the ladies stacked up:
Shannon Elizabeth and her partner Derek Hough danced the cha cha cha to Shut Up and Drive. Carrie Ann gave the couple a seven and told Shannon she had remarkable confidence and went for it; doing a beautiful job.
Len Goodman also gave the couple a seven. He said that they got the competition off to a good start. He complimented Shannon on her high energy but suggested that she work on straightening her legs.
Bruno Tonioli gave the couple a seven as well. He called Elizabeth a "sexy minx" and a "natural." He also suggested that she watch the tension in her legs.
The score of 21 put the couple in next to fourth place.
Monica Seles and her partner Jonathan Roberts danced the fox trot to Wherever You Go. Carrie Ann gave the couple a five and complimented Monica on her confidence as well. She recommended that she work to strengthen her core.
Len Goodman also gave the couple a five and told Monica that the routine was romantic and elegant. He suggested that Seles work on her core.
Bruno Tonioli gave the couple a five as well. He called their dance beautiful and romantic but said that strengthening her core would add grace to her routines.
The score of 15 put the couple in last place.
Tony award winner, Marissa Jared Winokur and her partner Tony Dovolani did the cha cha cha. Carrie Ann gave the couple a six and told Marissa that she loved her style, which overwhelmed her. However, she said that she was equally under whelmed by her cha cha, which was light on actual technique.
Len Goodman also gave the couple a six. He told Marissa he was bewitched, bothered, and bewildered. He was bewitched by her performance, bothered by her cha cha, and bewildered why Dovolani didn't give the talented girl more routine to work with.
Bruno Tonioli gave the couple a six as well. He told Marissa that her cha cha exploded with personality but didn't possess much technique.
The score of 18 put the couple in fifth place.
Priscilla Presley and her partner Louis Van Amstel danced the fox trot to It's a New Day. Carrie Ann gave the couple an eight. She said that Priscilla proved that age was nothing more than a number. She declared her the queen of the dance floor and said that she ruled it with great lines and extensions.
Len Goodman also gave the couple an eight and told Presley that she delivered not only a proper fox trot, but a beautiful one to boot.
Bruno Tonioli also gave the couple an eight, telling Presley that she delivered an uncompromising fox trot with star quality.
The score of 24 put the couple in second place.
Olympic gold skater, Kristi Yamaguchi, and her partner Mark Ballard danced the fox trot to Can You Imagine. Carrie Ann gave the couple a nine and said that Kristi danced effortlessly; as though she'd been doing it all of her life.
Len Goodman also gave the couple a nine and said that "the ice maiden melted my heart."
Bruno Tonioli gave the couple a nine as well, calling Kristi's performance wickedly good. He also said that Dancing with the Stars was finally on a roll and declared the dance routine the best first routine in the history of the show.
The score of 27 put this couple solidly in first place.
Oscar winning actress, Marlee Matlin, and her partner - - new pro - - Fabian Sanchez danced the cha cha to Get on Your Feet. Carrie Ann gave the couple a seven and said that she wouldn't have believed that Matlin could perform the way she did without having seen it for herself (referring to the actress's handicap of deafness).
Len Goodman also gave the couple a seven and declared the performance almost unbelievable; fluid and effortless.
Bruno Tonioli gave the couple an eight, calling the routine amazing, fluid, and very good. He suggested that Matlin watch her arms.
With a score of 22, the couple landed in third place.
Here is the standing to date:
First Place: Kristi Yamaguchi and Mark Ballard;
Second Place: Priscilla Presley and Louis van Amstel;
Third Place: Marlee Matlin and Fabian Sanchez;
Fourth Place: Shannon Elizabeth and Derek Hough;
Fifth Place: Marissa Jared Winokur and Tony Dovolani; and
Last Place: Monica Seles and Jonathan Roberts.
One male and one female celebrity will be eliminiated from the show Tuesday, March 25th. Everyone will have one final chance to dance for votes on Monday, March 24th.
