SmashZone Tennis Invades Atlantic Station and BB&T; Atlanta Open

The interactive SmashZone Tennis traveling roadshow is in Atlanta this weekend at Atlantic Station and the BB&T; Atlanta Open.

SmashZone began as the premier fan interactive attraction at the US Open and was later taken across the country to introduce youth tennis to children and their parents. In addition to making more children aware of the fun and excitement that comes with playing the game, SmashZone is a vehicle for the USTA to promote health and fitness.

Because it targets families, the Tour stopped at fairs, festivals, airshows, retail environments and downtown city centers in markets throughout the country. Last year, SmashZone made 19 stops and attracted more than 750,000 people to its tennis courts.

SmashZone Mobile includes a 53-foot trailer, which anchors four kid-sized tennis courts for youth play and is a complement to the USTA's ongoing youth participation initiative, 10 and Under Tennis. The trailer, which is handicap accessible, features interactive activities for visitors, including a Tennis Magazine Green Screen Cover Shoot, Wii Tennis and Touch Screen Kiosks to design their own racquet. SmashZone allows participants to try their skills on any of the four 10 and Under Courts, which feature games such as Rally Courts and a Target Challenge.

"A lot of the on court activities have local USTA volunteers coming out and local pros involved to show the proper grip and technique," said Chad Shirley, of Team Epic who works with the USTA on SmashZone.

The Tour also provided opportunities to integrate sponsors who share similar goals and objectives. Last year, Sport Court and Esurance participated in the tour as official sponsors with engagement ranging from on-court to branding activations.

The Tour has featured athletes, entertainers, and corporate endorsers trying tennis for the first time and touting its praise. The SmashZone Mobile Tour played an integral part of Nickelodeon's Worldwide Day of Play in September 2020, where NBA superstar Chris Paul; Victoria Justice, star of Nickelodeon's Victorious; Reverend Al Sharpton; and music producer and entertainer Percy "Master P" Miller along with his daughter, Cymphonique, star of Nickelodeon's series How to Rock, stopped by to hit tennis balls with children and to tell them that they are better able to lead a healthy and positive lifestyle through physical activity.

"We are thrilled to have the SmashZone Mobile Tour provide an opportunity for thousands of children to experience tennis for the first time," said Kurt Kamperman, USTA Chief Executive, Community Tennis. "The tour will introduce our 10 and Under Tennis program which is a wonderful approach to ensure children build confidence in their skills while having fun and leading a healthy lifestyle."

The SmashZone Mobile Tour has made quite a positive impact on local communities and served as a philanthropic opportunity. A visit to Joplin, MO provided much needed relief to kids and families after the tornado in the summer of 2020. In addition to the $50,000 cash donation made to help rebuild Joplin schools, the USTA provided tennis equipment to local tennis associations to help them rebuild their tennis programs. It provided an outlet and helped boost the spirits of the children and families affected by the disaster.

The SmashZone Mobile Tour was a platform to bring tennis to the masses through a premier interactive experience. This year the tour will hit the road for a 21-city mobile tour, which kicked-off March at the Atlanta Fair and will conclude in October with a stop in San Francisco.
