Cool Assistive Devices Available After Hip Replacement Surgery
Hip replacement surgery is becoming easier these days. So is at-home recovery with the "hip kit" filled with clever aids for daily lilving.
When I left the hospital after my recent hip replacement surgery, I went home with a "hip kit," a package of assistive devices to help me with everyday activities.
I was already set up at home with a walker, an elevated toilet seat with side bars, and a shower chair. These valuable items were loaned to me by a friend, but Medicare covers them, if you have Medicare. And my "fix-it man" brother-in-law set me up with a handheld shower and a grab bar next to my claw-foot bathtub. Both very handy!
I had to pay $32 for the hip kit, but it has been well worth the price.
Contents of Hip Kit
The sock aid, or sock putter-oner, as I call it, is an amazing invention. It's a plastic half-cylinder with two short ropes attached to eith side. People who can't bend their knee to put on a sock can put the sock on this device, then, holding the rope handles, slide their foot into the aid, which pulls out as the sock goes on.
My second favorite device is the clothing hook, a wooden broom handle with hooks of three sizes on either end, instead of a broom. It's great for pulling a sock off, pulling a pants leg up, and I'm sure, many other moves when getting dressed. So useful!
I use the long, handy grabber to pick up paper and other little things that fall on the floor. I get my morning paper on the porch with it. At the bottom is the pincer, which I control at the top by squeezing and unsqueezing.
I also got a nice long-handled sponge for scrubbing my back as I sit on my shower chair. That's a keeper!
I'm usually in non-slip socks or slip-on shoes, but as I begin to venture outside for short walks I've laced my sneakers with some of the elastic shoelaces in my packet. With the sneaker laced halfway up (enough) and already tied, I use the long-handled shoehorn to get it all the way on.
Other Useful Items During Recovery
I tried to prepare myself for recovery by making sure I had the no-slip socks, and then they gave me some at the hospital.
I also invested in a pretty, adjustable cane at the drugstore, and a good pair of slip-on shoes that were comfortable and had sturdy rubber soles.
I stocked up on frozen foods, and I made a list of friends who said, "If you need anything, just call."
Family, Home Health and Physical Therapy
I was lucky to have family who came and helped me the first week or two. But for people who don't have that, home health can provide assistance, or you have option now of a couple of weeks at a rehabilitation facility, where they'll start you off with your exercises and make sure you have three meals a day.
If You Need Something, Ask for It
I am amazed at the devices that have been invented-from these dressing aids for recovery from hip replacement, to magnifiers and talking clocks for the visually impaired, to walkers and wheelchairs, to phones for the deaf and hard of hearing, to computer help. And there are many more.
I hope that anyone with a physical limitation has access to the assistive devices that are available to make their lives a little easier. The best online source to start with is Abledata, an agency that does not sell products, but lets you know where to get them.
