Five Ways to Maximize Your Treadmil Workout

Getting the most out of your treadmill workout is an important part of losing weight, but saying that you will and doing it are two very different things. Here are five tips and tricks that can be used to help maximize your treadmill time.

There is no way around it; doing cardio on a treadmill is boring. You put one foot in front of the other but go nowhere. The scenery stays the same and because of the noise, even if you do have a workout buddy, it's practically impossible to engage in a conversation with them without shouting. It's very easy to quit earlier then you wanted to due to boredom, and the pain on your legs is amplified because you have nothing else to pay attention to. Here are five things I found that help me maximize my treadmill workout.

1. The most common way to distract your mind is by using headphones or watching the TV. I make a point to wait until my favorite show or a big game comes on that I have been waiting for and do my treadmill workout during that time. The advantage of knowing there is something on that you want watch or listen to beforehand leaves you no time for channel suffering or playing around with the radio while keeping a rhythm. You just get on, tune-in and start your cardio.

2. Having a workout buddy is kind of useless in the treadmill/cardio department unless you use them for something other than a conversation tool. When my best friend and I head to the gym with the intent for cardio, we compete for the bragging rights of who burns the most calories that day. The outcome is usually a tie, but if one of us has a second wind or a little more energy for that day, the other is forced to keep up as much as possible or face a miserable defeat and have to listen to the gloating of the winner.

3. I use hard candy and gum to break up some of the monotony. Between the sweat and heavy breathing that causes dry month, a little sweetness helps take my mind to a different place. If you decide to use gum, bring more than one piece and keep it fresh when needed. I choose Jolly Ranches, maybe one or two per treadmill workout. They last long and break up the run.

4. This might sound silly, but to pass the time on the treadmill, I write a list of things that I need to do that day or sometime in the future and bring that list with me on the treadmill. While walking and running I think about these things and decide how and when I am going to take care of them and in what order; while I'm taking care of one priority, I am preparing myself to take care of other priorities afterward. Although this works for me, it is not recommended for those of you who use working out as a stress reliever.

5. The most important tool that I use for maximizing my treadmill time is time itself. I always leave plenty of down time and then some after my workout. The reason this is so crucial to my workout is that some days, depending on how I feel, I may only have the energy to do the bare minimum or less, and other days I may have the energy to go the extra mile.
