Why Does My Knee Hurt
Knee pain can come from a variety of causes. Some are obvious but others are not. Here are some reasons, and home remedies to help deal with the pain.
Knee pain strikes most of us at some point in our lives. We demand a lot of them and don't always do the right things to prevent the pain…until it gets in the way of walking. Here are some of the obvious and not so obvious reasons for your knees to hurt.
Injury: This is one of the most likely sources of pain in the knees. Ligaments and tendons can tear and the patella can be broken. These injuries are very painful. Some of them may require surgery to repair the damage. If the bone shatters (mine did), you may need more than one surgery to repair the damage and remove any metal used to treat it.
Arthritis: Whether you injure your knee or not, arthritis is a problem. Many times it is tiny bits of bone or other tissue broken off and floating in the fluid around the joint. When one of these pieces rubs the wrong place, the pain can be serious.
Osteoporosis: This is not just another word for arthritis. This is actual thinning of the bones, making it easier for them to break or chip. This should be treated before it starts in order to prevent a lot of problems later in life.
High Heels: Yes, high heels can cause knee pain. These shoes force your joints out of correct position and that includes your knees. Having this happen over and over is going to cause pain and damage to your joints.
Gout: Granting that gout usually starts in the right big toe, that is not necessarily the only joint affected. All joints are at risk and while it is rare, it could start in the knees or strike them as the disease progresses.
Most of these conditions require a proper diagnosis from your doctor. The treatments vary in accordance with the problem. Some will require surgery, most will require medication and almost all may require physical therapy.
That doesn't mean there aren't a few home remedies that will help. The first to use would be RICE; rest, ice, compression and elevation. That translates to stay off of it, keep it propped up and use ice in twenty minute sessions.
Herbs that might help include willow bark, gotu kola and capsaicin. The willow and gotu kola can be made into a poultice (warm, wet plants applied to the skin). Capsaicin is so strong, it should only be acquired already prepared. You should also test it on a small portion of skin to see if your body can handle it. I have seen it cause second degree burns when proper precautions aren't used.
Knee pain is hard to live with. Until they begin to complain, we don't really appreciate all this joint does. Once it starts hurting, we get reminded in a hurry.
