John C. Stennis Memorial Hospital is a 25 bed hospital in DeKalb, Mississippi. It opened its doors in March 2020, and it offers in-patient and out-patient services.
John C. Stennis Memorial Hospital is a 25 bed hospital located right off of Highway 16 West in DeKalb, Mississippi. The hospital is named after Mississippi senator John C. Stennis who served for over 40 years. The hospital is a division of the Rush Health Care System. John C. Stennis Memorial Hospital opened in March 2020, and includes the following services: rehabilitation program, swing bed, x-ray department, lab, CT, Emergency Room, and inpatient services.
Although it does not have all the capabilities of its mother hospital in Meridian, John C. Stennis is a decent hospital.
Because John C. Stennis Hospital is located in the small town of DeKalb, it offers more of a personal touch. The hospital is small. It only has 25 bed and between 50 to 80 employees. A trip to the Emergency Room is not the dreaded experience it is at larger hospitals. The wait is short, and the service is fast. The times that I have had to visit the Emergency Room, I was pleasantly greeted by the clerk, and my wait to be seen was not long.
The nurses work 12 hour shifts, and they offer skilled nursing care. Most of them are very friendly, and they have that same hospitality that the South is famous for. They go out of their way to make sure the patients are well cared for and comfortable. And, most of them are natives of Kemper County and the surrounding area.
The doctors that work at John C. Stennis are friendly. They work for the Rush Health Care System and are experienced physicians.
The rooms are a decent size. They are bright, beautifully painted, and clean. They offer patients the privacy that they need and want.
John C. Stennis Hospital offers Swing Bed services for patients who need rehabilitation. Their therapy department has skilled therapists on staff who work intensely to help get patients back on their feet and well enough to return home or to a long-term care facility.
The hospital also has a cafeteria that serves hot, delicious meals. The food is also reasonably priced. The cafeteria is open to the public from 7:00 A.M. to 9 A.M. and again at 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. Many of the local people stop in to grab breakfast or lunch myself included.
John C. Stennis Memorial Hospital does have a helicopter on site. The helicopter can quickly airlift a patient in critical condition to another facility.
The hospital does have some negatives. Because it is a relatively new hospital and has such a small staff, it is not able to take care of extremely critical patients. The patients who need more intense care are stabilized and transported to the main hospital in Meridian or airlifted to one of the hospital in Jackson, Mississippi. Patients are not kept at the hospital for extended periods of time. Patients in need of longer term care are also transported to the main facility.
So, on a scale of 1 to 5 (1 being the worst and 5 being the best), what would I give the hospital? I would give John C. Stennis Memorial Hospital a 4.
