How to Avoid Shin Splints
Shin splints affect most runners at some point in their years of exercise, but by carefully monitoring running surfaces, shoes, and the type of exercise in which the individual engages, runners and others can avoid the pain.
#1: Run and exercise on soft surfaces.
Grass, wood chips, sand, and your local high school track all provide varying levels of cushioning that are far softer than the concrete or asphalt in the street. Running on at least one of these surfaces each week instead of the sidewalk will help stave off shin splints. In addition, runners who do have problems with shin splints work out in a swimming pool at least once a week, simulating the act of running in the deep end of a pool, also known as aqua-jogging.
#2: Get shoes with plenty of support.
Shoes are the most important piece of equipment that a runner buys. Spend time when you go into the store, and try on as many shoes as you can. Make sure there is plenty of cushioning in the heel, as hard strikes to the heel with every step contribute to shin splints. In addition, try to avoid running in racing flats, especially in road races. Racing flats have less cushioning in order to make them weigh less, but unless you are accustomed to running in flats, that lack could be more detrimental than helpful.
#3: Don't wear shoes more than six months or 400 miles.
The 6/400 rule is not hard and fast, but it is important to be wary of how long you've had your shoes. Over time, the cushioning in athletic shoes breaks down, providing less protection against the pounding impact of exercise. For runners in particular, it is key to change shoes regularly to keep the cushioning working for you.
#4: Vary your exercise routine.
Running the same route on the same streets day after day takes a toll on your body as well as your mind! Incorporating a cross-training routine (including other aerobic exercise, like biking, swimming, rowing, kick-boxing, or power yoga) can give you the freedom to continue to stay in shape without the higher likelihood of developing shin splints.
In all cases, listening to your body is the best way to prevent shin splints. Being aware of the age of your equipment, how many miles you are running each week, and varying your routine can help keep you running and exercising pain-free for much longer periods of time.
