Eye-hand coordination is important for a child to learn so they are able to transfer what they see into completing a task with their hands. A craft item that helps a child to learn eye-hand coordination is stringing pasta noodles on a piece of yarn or string. The holes in the noodles must be large enough for the child to string easily. This activity is an excellent activity for children between the ages of three and five years old. Some children younger than three may be able to complete the project with minimal help.
Supplies:
Assortment of dried pasta such as macaroni, penne, rigatoni, mostaccioli and wagon wheels
24-inch length of yarn, heavy string or buttonhole thread
Scissors
Newspaper
Watercolor paints
Paintbrush
Water
Water container
Instructions:
Step 1 - Tie a pasta noodle on the end of the yarn or string prior to giving it to the child. This will prevent the noodles from falling off. Remove the noodle once the child completes the necklace.
Step 2 - Place between 20 to 40 different pieces of dried pasta noodles on a flat work surface so the child had easy access.
Step 3 - Show the child how to string the pasta noodles. Remove the noodles you have placed on the string.
Step 4 - Tell the child to string the noodles in any order they desire.
Step 5 - Remove the noodle tied to the end of the yarn or string. Tie the two ends together in a secure knot.
Step 6 - Cover the work surface with a layer of newspaper. Ask the child to place the necklace on the newspaper surface.
Step 7 - Instruct the child to paint the noodles with water color paints. Show the child how to dip the paintbrush in the water then in the water color paint. Watch as the child brushes the watercolor onto the noodle. Provide further help as needed.
Step 8 - Hang the painted pasta noodle necklace in a safe location to dry.
Optional: Once the child understands the concept of stringing the pasta noodles, allow the child to string large holed buttons and pony beads either separately or in combination with the pasta noodles.
