How to Hit a Winning Tennis Forehand
A short lesson on how to hit a tennis forehand ground stroke. Contains tips and tricks.
The first step with any tennis groundstroke is to begin in the ready position with your dominant hand on your rackets grip and your weaker hand resting on the triangle just below the racket face. This position will allow you to adjust your grip to either the forehand or backhand side. For forehand I suggest the continental or Eastern grip.
Once you determine incoming tennis ball is going to your forehand side begin to turn your shoulders until they are perpendicular with the net and with the help of your opposite arm start bringing your racket back. At this point in time your wrist should be firmly laid-back and your eyes should be on the incoming tennis ball.
When the tennis ball reaches the top of its bounce swing your arm forward making sure to keep your wrist laid back. When you're racket head makes contact with the ball it should be parallel to the net and perpendicular to the ground. Your swing should be a windshield wiper like motion starting from low behind your back going up across your chest, contacting the ball only a few inches in front of your body, and then travel up over your shoulder. The follow-through of the swing is the most important part as ensures the tennis ball will create topspin and dive into the opposing player's court. Top spin makes the ball harder to hit and easier to keep inbounds.
When you learn to contact the ball evenly and consistently begin to try and aim for you at the ball. The easiest type of forehand is a crosscourt forehand. Statistically they stay in the most and give you the most room to work with. If you want to try and hit a winning forehand try a forehand up the line. These can confuse an opponent and win you the point. In order to hit a forehand down the line you must quickly change your footing at the last second so your front foot is pointing straight down the line.
Once you learn to hit accurate forehand's now you can begin to add more power and also flatten out your swing. Both of these things add speed to the ball making it harder for the opponent to get a good swing. These types of shots are called winners and are usually reserved for veteran tennis players.
