What Andy Murray’s Victory Means for the Scottish Independence Debate
With Scotsman Andy Murray's victory in the Wimbledon tennis championships leading to celebration across the whole of Britain, will voters in the Scottish independence referendum feel a boost in their affection for a united Great Britain?
On Thursday 18th September 2020, people in Scotland will vote in a referendum on whether Scotland should be a completely independent country. This will be just over a year after Scottish tennis player Andy Murray became Wimbledon Men's Singles Champion, sending the whole of England as well as Scotland into delighted celebration.
One question that all parties in the debate leading up to that vote will have to answer, in order to persuade people to their side of the argument, is 'what is most important in the independence question?' Is it the practical differences that independence will make; the financial differences to individuals and the impact on the Scottish economy as a whole? Is it the ability to make further administrative changes in important areas such as law, education and health which have already been made distinct from English policy since devolution?
Or are desires for independence, and indeed desires to avoid it, based on more abstract, sentimental notions of national pride and identity.
Most likely, people's motivations in which way to vote will be a mixture of both. And if sentimental factors do play a part, then they are the same sentiments of patriotism that lead us to cheer on people from our nation in sporting events. Why we care so much that someone we never met, who happens to be from the same country as us, wins a game of tennis is a difficult question to answer. It may be that it helps us to feel that our nation, and therefore by extension ourselves, are of the sort of character that can win championships.
However, it may also be a celebration and excitement not just of an individual or team's success, but of our united cause in getting behind and supporting them. Sport is something that can make us feel more at one with our countrymen.
Scots may disagree, and there will be people who think English celebration of a Scottish success is a bit cheap, but to many Andy Murray's victory felt like a victory for Britain. Union Jacks were waving as an incredible Scottish talent took victory in a wonderful English tournament. It was a day to feel proud to be, specifically, British.
Such occasions are quickly forgotten as people go back to the concerns of their everyday lives, but with such a short time to go until the referendum in Scotland, Murray's moment at Wimbledon might just have persuaded some on-the-fence voters that British people make quite a good team - a team that might be better off to remain undivided.
