Small Screen Stars Who Should Play Big Screen Heroes

Many TV stars become film legends playing iconic heroes. Here are some current primetime stars who could ably fill the shoes of some of cinema's most famous protagonists.

Though Selleck became a fixture of primetime TV and Brosnan finally got his chance to play Bond a decade later, both missed out on what would surely have been career-making roles at the time due to their existing obligations. With remakes and reboots the modus operandi in Hollywood of late, it's only a matter of time before casting directors start scanning the network lineups for rising stars to take over some of the silver screen's most iconic roles. So which TV actors should consider having an exit clause written into their contracts as soon as possible?

It's time to go inside your digital cable box for a little outside-the-box casting conjecture.

1. James Bond - Daniel Craig is excellent in the role, but debt problems at MGM have put the long-running film franchise on an indefinite hiatus. Craig won't wait forever, meaning someone else may have to take up 007's famed Walther PPK sooner rather than later. One intriguing choice might be The Mentalist's Simon Baker. Though not known for tough guy roles, Baker has the good looks and smug charm of Brosnan or Roger Moore, and would definitely bring back fans alienated by the more brutal, ruthless Bond of Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace. Craig's already cleared the "blonde Bond" hurdle, and Baker has legions of (mostly female) fans tuning in to see him every Thursday night. The fact that he's British certainly doesn't hurt, either.

2. Dirty Harry Callahan - Clint Eastwood is 80, and has no desire to reprise his role as the no-nonsense San Francisco homicide detective. NCIS's Michael Weatherly, on the other hand, is only 41, and tops the Nielsen ratings every week as Special Agent Anthony DiNozzo. Though the character began as more sophomoric clown than action hero, Weatherly has shown in seven years in the role that he can be tough, steely-eyed, and even scary when playing the former Baltimore cop deadly straight. His height and good looks definitely recall Eastwood circa 1970, and he knows his way around prop guns and staged police procedure.

3. John McClane - These days, it's hard to imagine this character as anything but a bald, unstoppable badass. In the first Die Hard, however, New York cop John McClane still had hair, and was still a tough but basically average guy. CSI:NY's Carmine Giovinazzo has the streetwise syntax and tough guy demeanor to play an "Average Joe" detective in over his head battling international terrorists. Though not as gifted with sarcasm as Willis (who was the star of the primetime detective comedy Moonlighting when he first landed the role), Giovinazzo is likable and believable enough that theater audiences would root for him.

4. Martin Riggs - Mel Gibson could try to repair his tarnished image by returning to the role of half-crazy super cop Riggs in another Lethal Weapon sequel, but Hollywood would likely find the notion of a reboot with a less controversial lead actor more appealing. If that happens, Jeffrey Donovan of Burn Notice would be perfect for the part. Donovan already walks a remarkably fine line between sympathetic and psychotic on the hit USA Network spy series. It wouldn't be hard to imagine him as a reckless, sometimes suicidal detective who can only find comfort for the death of his wife by putting bad guys out of circulation with (if you'll pardon the expression) extreme prejudice.

5. Ace Ventura - One look at the lackluster sequels to Dumb and Dumber and The Mask will tell you that there is only one Jim Carrey. With the rubber-faced actor having left behind the role that made him a star seemingly forever, however, there is an opportunity for another comic thespian to step in and make the quirky character his own. Psych's James Roday would probably be up for the task. Though not quite as manic as Carrey, Roday is just as sarcastic, quick-witted, self-assured, and hilarious in his own right. Better still, he already plays an off-beat detective in one of cable TV's funniest and most beloved series. Get Psych co-star Dule Hill onboard in the Tone Loc role of straight man, and Hollywood might have on its hands that rarest of commodities - a comedy remake that's just as funny as the original.

6. Indiana Jones - Yes, Harrison Ford can still wear the fedora and crack the whip like a man half his age. Sooner or later, though, someone's going to have to step into the well-worn shoes of this timeless hero. If that someone is going to come from network TV, let's hope it turns out to be Mark Valley of FOX's Human Target. Valley has the same sort of good looks and slightly world-weary toughness that make Ford so amiable in the role, and he has plenty of experience narrowly escaping death as bodyguard/spy/commando Christopher Chance. Like the globetrotting, Nazi-thwarting archaeologist, Valley's Chance relies as much on luck as he does skill to survive the countless attempts on his life each and every week. It's not difficult to envision Valley getting the crap kicked out of him by a muscle bound Aryan henchman, only to be saved by the timely intervention of a whirling propeller or ricocheting bullet. Despite their near miss with Tom Selleck, Spielberg and Lucas shouldn't hesitate to take a chance (pun fully intended) on this up and coming action star should they ever need a new man to call "Dr. Jones".
