Tennis for Two: Working Towards a Healthier Lifestyle
A personal recount of doing something enjoyable while working towards a healthier lifestyle.
Aside from being overweight and out of shape, like a lot of people, I am not financially stable enough to go out and join a gym for a year or more. Everything I purchased was reasonably priced, like my Head racquet and twelve Wilson tennis balls cost me twenty dollars at Wal-Mart, that's it! The mountain bike was another story, also from Wal-Mart, cost me $125.00. I am a tightwad, so my friend had to comfort me with a box of tissues after I bought my bike and got it home because I felt that I would never ride it enough to get my money's worth. Boy was I wrong!
So, I decided the best way to make any progress was to have a buddy. Someone to keep me motivated on my venture towards a healthy lifestyle. It also makes it easier to play tennis if you have two! My friend, Kerry, and I started off playing about an hour of tennis a few nights a week. Now when I say we play tennis, I don't mean "play tennis". We just hit the ball back and forth and make the very best effort to work up a good sweat. No score, no stress, no hurt feelings due to two competitive people.
While walking my bike through the store, waiting to pay for it and take it home, I had childhood memories running through my mind of how much fun I had riding up and down the road. Fifteen years later, I'm gasping for air as I ride up the hill, with what feels like fire running through my legs! My friend, gasping for air because he is laughing so hard! I made myself keep going like this, night after night for that first week. Not ever riding more than a mile or so, knowing that it had to get easier. Every night I rode, it hurt less and my breathing was more even.
Three months later... We play two hours of tennis and ride six to ten miles almost every night. Sadly, I have not lost any weight, but I have gained muscle. I have more energy than I ever expected to have.
