Southern Section Juniors Selected for Prestigious USTA Tennis Camp

Two juniors from the USTA Southern Section head to Minneapolis for a USTA tennis camp.

Lowe, 14, was nominated by Sam Kennedy from the South Atlanta Community Tennis Association based on her leadership qualities, academics, tennis skills and extracurricular activities.

"Kaelyn has several qualities that will make her successful at this camp," said Kennedy, who doubles as the tennis coach at Lowe's school. "She is very open to listening to new ideas and is creative enough to think outside of the box. She is dedicated and willing to spend whatever time and energy it takes to get the job done. And lastly, she has integrity. She is the same inside and out."

Rollins is represents the Hadley Park Jr. Tennis Development Program in Nashville.

"Jamen's most outstanding quality is that he has a calm, even demeanor and that he is a thinker," said Dell Pride, the professional who recommended Rollins for the camp. "Also, Jamen is able to assess, process and retain information well. He is a quick learner, which explains how he is a self-taught artist favoring the Manga style as well as his pursuit for fluency in the Chinese language."

The all-expenses paid week-long camp provides the attendees with tennis instructions as well as rewarding educational and motivational experiences. During the camp, instructors emphasize the importance of individual skill development, physical fitness, proper nutrition and good sportsmanship. The students will receive tennis lessons four to seven hours daily from several of the most experienced coaches in the game; hear from guest speaker Jon Rydberg - U.S. Men's wheelchair tennis player and 2020 Paralympian; and volunteer locally to sort and pack donated books for shipment to the "Books for Africa" projects and programs.

The USTA/NJTL Tennis Leadership Camp was created in 1984 to provide an educational and motivational tennis experience for NJTL participants who might not otherwise have access to such an opportunity. The camp is held in a different city each year and has recently been held in Atlanta, Denver, Washington, D.C., Seattle, San Diego, Orlando, and Sonoma Valley.
