Georgia State Junior Closed Qualifying Championships Rolls On

Draws move forward as juniors compete in state tennis event.

In the girls 12s, Yekaterina Alferova and doubles partner Angel Carney beat the top-seeded team, Hannah Hutchings and Peyton Lee, 8-4. Alferova and Carney didn't let their opponents' top-seed status bother them.

"We had confidence," Carney said.

Alferova stepped up her game.

"I stood my ground when a ball came right at me," Alferova said. "Volleys (usually) aren't my strong shot."

All four of the girls train at the Universal Tennis Academy in Atlanta.

"We didn't really like knowing that we had to play our teammates," Lee said.

Despite losing, the top-seeded team was proud to come in second place.

"It means a lot," Hutchings said. "There were so many girls here that would love to have this. You can't take anything for granted."

Alexa Bortles and Mallory Gilmer defeated Danielle Bauers and Lauren McCall 8-5 in the Girls 14s doubles finals.

"I'm just very happy," said Gilmer, who had to win four matches to hold the trophy. "They could hit with a lot of pace."

Gaston Muhammad from Duluth won his singles main draw match against Andres Martin by a score of 6-4, 6-3. Muhammad is the No. 5 seed in the Bboys 12s.

"I just want to focus on right now," Muhammad said. "In the second set, I was up 5-0, and he won three straight games. I got nervous after that, but I still pulled it out."

Macon's Liza Klyachkin lost in the consolation draw to No. 9 Julie Fowler, 6-2, 6-2.

"It wasn't the prettiest," Klyachkin said. "I've sorta lost my groove, and I wasn't hitting the ball hard enough to be tough on my opponent."

Klyachkin would have like to have gone deeper in the draw but said the tournament was good practice.

"I play Mercer tennis in the fall," she said. "I want to be match play ready."
