How I Learned to Use My Apartment Amenities
This story explains how I learned to use the apartment amenities (swimming pool, racquetball court, exercise and game room) that are included in my monthly rent.
Yet, a wise friend warned me, "You'll never use it." Sadly, she was right. Six months later, I still couldn't find the game room somewhere in my complex's maze. Exercising? It was a nice idea.
That all changed when I realized how much I had to offer my friends. In my newfound desire to be a hostess, I learned that having access to the game room meant that instead of sitting around on the living room couch talking, that we could be also be playing a free game of billiards.
The indoor and outdoor pool also gave friends an opportunity to enjoy swimming-on me.
The racquetball court? I bought used rackets and new balls that sat in my combination-lock locker for almost a year before I found its real purpose: it's a safe place for kids to play. I figured this out by accident when watching my friend's seven-year-old son. We were playing table tennis in the game room when he kept bouncing the ball off the table. It was the "aha" moment that took the table out of the equation and put me in the middle of a combination racquetball/dodge ball match! It didn't matter that I didn't know how to play the game. He didn't either and besides, his rules were much more fun.
My desire to find a workout partner lead me to the management office where I asked if they knew anyone who wanted to workout buddy. They didn't. Yet, learned months later that the team was on a mission to find someone for me. Oddly enough, I found a weight loss and exercise buddy while attending the complex's "dessert night." Now, we work out three times a week and find that a half hour on the dreaded treadmill goes fast when you're talking with someone about the day's events.
For me, having access to the amenities I paid for just meant finding a way to make them a part of my daily life. It took me awhile but it feels great using the "free" perks that came as part of apartment living.
