Journal of a Ferret Owner: A Day in a Life

Are you thinking about getting a pet? Thinking about a ferret? Well before you go out and purchase your new furry little friend, why not try and walk a day in a ferret owners shoes?

First, you need to know what ferrets eat. In the U.S you can actually buy ferret food, and that can be convenient in that it has a lot of the vitamins ferrets need. But looking at their little teeth should give you a hint of what they really like. In the wild ferrets would eat small animals, so you'll want to provide your little critter with some fresh meat each day. Fat and protein is very important as they provide the ferret with energy to actually get out of the hammock and play.

As such, I wake up every morning, and before having breakfast, prepare my ferrets breakfast. She has a nice serving of either lamb, beef, or chicken. I cut it up into little pieces, give her the first one and then put the rest in her bowl. She'll usually nibble on them throughout the morning while I get ready for the day.

After breakfast she usually has a nap before coming out to play. Ferrets love to sleep, so I usually have to pull her out of her hammock and carry her around the house with me for a bit while she shakes off the sleep. Sometimes she wants to cuddle for a long time and others she just wants down to play, either way she eventually gets her playtime and begins her exploration of the house.

Ferrets are naturally curious creatures so if you don't want them in something you'll need to pick it up, move it, or put it in a closed off room before you let your ferret out. These little critters do not like to be hurried out of rooms or having things taken away, so try and close off rooms and pick things up beforehand. However, you are the boss so if you slip up and forget to close a room you can always pick up your ferret and carry his/her little self body elsewhere. Also, remember that ferrets are very smart! They can open loose containers, open boxes, and will push open any door you have not completely shut. Moreover, ferrets love to find and stash things! They will dig into just about anything to find something to steal and hide away. The trick is keeping bags closed and small hazardous things off the ground. As for everything else, including small treats they want to save for later, you'll have to find out where the hiding spots are so you can clean them out daily.

During this time your ferret will want to play and to have company. If you can't spend time with your pet there really is no point in having one, so be sure you have some time to play with your ferret. Play time is one form of bonding time with your ferret and this time is especially important if your ferret is the only one. They need face time and someone to play with, as most pets do. My ferret loves when I take a puppy squeaky ball and squeeze it a couple times. The noise gets her so excited and she makes a mad dash for it. We then play a little tug game for it and I roll it around the room and make her chase it. Since it is rubber I can't let her get it for too long and chew on it because she can rip it up and get it caught inside her. However, I usually let her carry it around a bit in victory. She'll generally stash it somewhere and when she's not looking I'll take it back.

She also likes to play with another puppy toy that is a small tennis ball with a rope attached. She loves carrying this around the house and generally will busy herself with it for hours just moving it around from place to place and taking it to me to play tug of war with. Apparently ferrets love a game of tug of war, and they are pretty strong too!

After a good deal of play your ferret will want some sleep. I let mine sleep around the house. She has a blanket I gave to her and she likes to make a tunnel in it and sleep there during the day in between play times. I have to remind myself not to step on any linens left on the floor just in case she is in them! Ferrets love tunnels so they will hide, play, and sleep in anything resembling this. I often find mine in the dirty clothes pile, in towels I leave on the bedroom floor, or in the blankets hanging off the bed. It is just something to be careful of while the ferret is out.

My ferret is usually sleeping while I have lunch, but I make sure there is food available for her and that there is plenty of clean, fresh water. Dinner is also prepared before mine and I give it to her while I'm eating so she has something to eat and won't beg too much. Ferrets are natural beggars and it can be heartbreaking watching them in action. I don't want too much temptation to give her something she shouldn't have, so this is a good way to prevent it.

Until around midnight, I allow my ferret to run around freely, play with me, and even sit on my lap as I watch TV. At midnight I she's usually exhausted and falling asleep either in my lap or in her blanket so I carry her to her hammock and put her in. She usually curls up and goes right to sleep.

Maintenance for ferrets includes scooping the litter box inside the cage and the various boxes around the house. (If you get a baby ferret you'll have to litter box train them). Cleaning their ears and trimming their nails as needed. Baths every couple months or as needed (if the ferret gets into anything nasty), cleaning the ferrets hammock, cleaning out hiding areas at least twice a week (at least!), preparing fresh healthy meals.

Caring for any animal is a lot of work, especially if it is an uncommon pet like a ferret. Different pets have different needs, so it's good to find out what your pet needs. Furthermore, every ferret is different in personality and preferences. I went through a million different treats before finding the ones my ferret likes best. Likewise, I went through a number of different toys before finding ones she'd actually play with. So figuring out your ferrets mannerisms, attitude, personality, and likes and dislikes is a very important and fun part of owning a ferret. Embrace this and provide your ferret with the love and entertainment they need and they'll love you forever.
