"Sneakerheads!": Is There Such a Thing?
Take a look into a world that is run by the exclusivity of a retro tennis shoe.
A sneaker-head is not usually a person that you'll catch in the same pair of tennis-shoes more than once a week. Due to the fact that they usually own so many, that they can manage to wear a different pair with every outfit. At the same time however, you may rotate a few pairs of "every-day wears" so as to preserve the exclusives of your collection.
As a self-proclaimed Sneaker-head myself, I can say that my passion for collecting "pavement pounders" is a deep rooted one indeed. Like most other sneakerheads around the country I was captivated at a young age when the Jordan series started to take off. Being such a young kid at the time( the reckless years) accompanied by the cost of those particular shoes, my parents weren't too cool about spending up to $150 on a pair of sneakers for me to demolish in less that a month. However, I managed to obtain just enough pairs to fuel this flame for, at least, the rest of my young adult life. So between the allure that a shoe like an Air Jordan had on a kid like me and my willingness as an adult to purchase as many pairs as my bank account can stand, one can formulate a reason behind collecting sneakers. Therefore, I grant you the ability to understand the birth and psycology of a sneakerhead.
The types of sneakers that excite the sneaker community and end up being hoarded for auction on eBay doesn't stop at Air Jordans. In fact you can find any shoe from your past on so many different sites on the web. Everything from old Nike Air Max to even older PF Flyers...They are out there! But don't expect to pay the same price now for those PF's or Jordans that you paid from years 1983-2000, because trust me, a pair of Jordans are a sneakerheads Jimmy Choo. And the price tag is what lets you know. Especially with a site like eBay being taken into consideration. If you were to do a search on eBay for a pair of Air Jordan III(edition # 3), and found that they were an authentic pair of AJ3's, you could end up paying up to three hundred dollars for that pair. Hang on, it gets better!!! Say you were looking on eBay for a Jordan Defining Moments Pack, which is a set of two different pairs of Jordan shoes( Editions 11 and 6) that commemorate two special events in Michael Jordans career and the shoes he wore during those two occasions. Now since this special edition was made in limited number, if you can find them now days (and truly authentic) you can spend anywhere from $700 to $1500. Astronomical, I know!
Why are these shoes so expensive?, you might ask. Well simply put, it's all about the exclusivity and high demand for these items. Especially a shoe like Air Jordans that were the main focus of wannabe professional athletes that have grown up to be professionals of other fields but still hold on to that feeling that a fresh pair of J's gave.
However, Just like there are Fake Louis Vuitton handbags and Fake Manolo's (Manono's) there too are fake tennis-shoes. From the first Air Jordans to the latest pair of Nike Air Force 1's, there are counterfeiters across the globe. In the sneaker industry, they're termed Variants. A Variant shoe is a shoe that is made exactly like the real thing, and in some cases, in the same factory, but with some slight modifications. The criteria for fake sneakers include dead give away's such as the Jumpman logo facing the wrong direction, the style (clolorway) being one that was never released by the actual shoe brand or the shoe doesn't fit like it should. Example: you ordered a 12 but they fit like a 10. Thus alarming you that the shoe you are about to purchase or have purchased is not the real deal and in fact is a flat out fake! Now of course, there can be the occasional upside to purchasing a variant shoe because they are much cheaper. What would usually sell for $300 on eBay will sell for $90 on a Variant site. But the important thing to know about Variant sites and EBay is that there are a lot of scammers out there that might not even bother to send you any merchandise at all. So buyers, BEWARE!
There is much more involved in being a sneakerhead than simply owning a couple pairs of J's, Adidas, Reebok Pumps or Chuck Taylor's, but hopefully this will get you better acquainted with your friends strange hobby.
